Ga. Cougar
« on: August 25, 2009, 12:57:19 AM »
Back in December of last year (http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,156909.0.html), I posted about a cougar killed here in Troup County.  The DNR has finished their investigation, and is now saying that the cat is a Florida panther roaming large to find a new territory.
There is also the possiblilty the shooter may be charged by the US Fish and Wildlife Dept. because the cougar is a Federally protected endangered species.  I report this, because there are always reports of people seeing these cats, and this is the first confirmed sighting.  If the hunter had not shot it, it would have been just another story.  Now for him, it might become a big story.......

Cougers aka puma and mountain lion in general are not federally protected I don't think since many states have seasons on them. However the Floridia panther as a sub species might be. I know the law in Alabama is ya can't shoot one if ya see one. I suspect it's the same in Georgia.

Check out the Sept. GON mag. they have a write up on it. Yes it was a Fla. panther and they are Federally protected. It is a wait and see if the shooter will have legal problems. The article also goes on to say that eastern Panthers are extinct and the Western panters are okay to shoot in Ga.
