Model 54 Winchester Question
« on: September 14, 2009, 09:28:01 AM »
I've an opportunity to purchase a standard model 54 Winchester in 30-06 that was made in 1927, for $500.  I've personally not seen the rifle, other than pics, but seller claims rifle is in good to excellent condition.  Rifle has a lyman peep sight installed.  So, any problems with these early model 54s.  For example,  I understand Winchester changed to a one piece fireing pin around 1930 when they made changes to stock design of the model 54 around 1930.   $500 seems a decent price to me.  What are your opinions on this price?

Predecessor of the famous M70 I believe. If you like Winchester rifles I think it would be an excellent rifle to own. I think if you're just getting it as a shooter and nothing more there are likely better buys in more modern rifles. If you like a bit of history in your rifles then for sure that one has it.

IIRC, The Model 54 was the direct descendant of the 1903 Springfield - and a pretty decent rifle in it's own right.

I prefer early rifles like that one, and the 1920 Savage, because they're nice/light carrying rifles, instead of an 8 lb + rifle like most that followed.

Maybe I'm just a sucker for schnobble-tipped stocks - since my current Winchester is a M70 FW Classic,
