What does smashing a bullet with a hammer tell me about hardness?
« on: September 02, 2009, 06:06:44 AM »
Serious question.

I smashed a factory Hornady cast, mystery TMJ (plated?), and a mystery hard cast.

The first 2 got flat pretty easily, the last took a little more effort. Does this mean anything? Yes, I have too much time.

LOL ! :)
Yes, you proofed that bullets can be flattened out. Some take a bit more effort then others. I suggest you don't try to flatten one that has a tungsten insert :D

Hornady DOES NOT sell cast bullets. They are pure or nearly pure lead SWAGED bullets.

IF you swung the hammer the same with both bullets it shows that the swaged bullet is more ductile or malleable than the hard cast.
Don't know if there is any real world carry over for this kind of info.

The more you smash, the harder it gets?

To be able to give you a serious answer(unlike these other jokers) I need to know what kind of hammer, how much it weighs, and what the surface the bullets were on is. Also if you're right or left handed.

The hammer test will at least let you know if a cast bullet is to brittle.

I don't KNOW what you were trying to discover hammering bullets. You now KNOW some bullets are harder to smash than others!  A better test to determine relative hardness is to put 2 bullets end to end in a vice. Turn the handle a few times to squash them both. Remove them from the vice and check their lengths as compared to before squashing them. The shorter bullet is the softer one.  You did NOt say if these were hand gun or rifle bullets, but the effect is the same.

Relative expansion of bullets shot at 175fps at a hammer.
If I agreed with you then we would both be wrong.
