We got some bad news :Update
« on: September 09, 2009, 02:28:07 PM »
Got a phone call last night. When I saw the number I expected Dad to say "lets go fishing this weekend". Instead he told me he had prostrate cancer. They biopsied 6 sections, 2 samples in each section. Four of the samples came back cancerous. He went for more blood work today, and tomorrow they are going to see if it has spread to any lymph nodes or other organs. He should have the results back next week.

Pop and I never got along too well. The last little bit, we have started spending more time together. I am really hoping they caught this early enough so they can fix it.

Thanks for listening
Greg

I wish you the best with your father. I sure miss my dad. The bad news Is that is about one of the worst cancers to get. It killed my cousin and a friend of mine. My cousin lasted 6 months after they said she had it and my friend about a year. Your dad will be in my prayers. :'( Sorry Dale

Sorry to hear about your Dad's illness...doesn't mean you won't be able to enjoy more fishing trips together.   Do your research if you haven't already...lots more info out there than when my Dad was diagnosed some thirty years ago.  It's treatable and survivable in many cases.  I have a friend that got PC in his early forties...radical surgery, radiation...lived through it and is still thriving today over eight years later.  Good luck to your Dad...praying he has a full recovery.

Also, to anyone over 40 who isn't getting tested at least annually...DO IT!  A simple blood test (PSA) and digital exam can save your life by early detection.

The test isn't that bad Dale. It's worth it if it catches a problem.

I had it done last year for the first time. I did have a female doctor though. ;D

Sorry to hear about your dad. Mine is in the hospital right now. They're not sure if it is pneumonia or lung cancer yet.

It's very difficult watching the man you admired growing up withering away. Enjoy whatever time you have left with him.

It's painless and takes about 10 seconds, if that long. It's just the indignity.  ;D Seriously, you should have the test every year after you hit 50. I'm well past 50 and have been getting one and the PSA test for years now.

They caught my Dad's with a PSA test.  I think they look for a number over 4. Pop's numbers were usually less than 1. This last one was between 2 and 3. The change was radical enough to make them do the tests.

Our best to you & your father.
Have been close to what you are going through.
By luck dad's was not cancer, just enlarged.
He takes meds for it and has little problem with it now.

Sorry to hear about your Dad, that's a rough deal. I hope he beats this, but it also reminds us to "live each day as though it was our last."

Please keep us informed. I will certainly include your Dad in my prayers.

My younger brother was diagnosed and had prostate surgery two years ago.  So far he is cancer free.  My wife was diagnosed with lung cancer in Feb. this year, had surgery, chemo, and her first post-treatment scan 3 weeks ago was clean.  Early detection, prompt treatment and prayer are all powerful allies in the fight.  Keep the faith.  I'll be praying for you all too.

Sorry to hear about your dad. One of the cancers I have now is prostate, followed by liver and kidneys. My PSA test still is rated as 1. I'm too old to operate on, not worth it I guess.
Lost my Donna in 2005 to cancer. Seems like it is everywhere. Get lots of advice and do some research on your own before he does anything. Maybe even get second opinion.
Your dad will be in my prayers.

Dale don't worry about it, the worst part is getting the lube off afterwards.

I've had it done every six months for 33 years now.  I had prostitus when I was 27.  My prostate swelled up to the point I lost bladder control.  I drove from Phoenix to Anchorage, up through Canada, sitting on a doggie pee pee pad, not really knowing what the problem was.  The border patrol really checked me out let me tell you.

Once in Anchorage, a quick ten second check and the doctor knew what the problem was.  One bottle of drugs and 24 hours later I was back to normal.  Well not really back to normal, but everything was functioning properly again.

The real problem, I was 27, she was 20, 4'11', 98lb, Strawberry blond.  33 years later I still have that problem.  Hence the semi annual check-ups.

It's all the Ex-wife's fault.  If she had not kicked me out, I never would have married the little blond.

I will pray.
I know what kind of relationship you have had with your father---my son has had the same with his father. Steel against steel.
Don't work yourownself into a lather worrying about that though---it is but a slight challenge. As He and I get older the closer we are. The basic love was always there and I am sure that is the same between you two. I bet that he loved you more than you can ever know.
I am confident that there will be much time left for you two too see that buried hatchet rust and decay.
Blessings

I am sorry to hear about your father and pray for the best.

It’s unfortunate, but most men refuse to get regular checks up for these problems.  I shutter at the idea of getting a proto, but will have another one in a couple of weeks just as a check-up.  I see an Urologist each year and get the finger wave to check the prostrate, I don’t like it but consider it a necessity to locate any potential problems.  Many of these conditions can be effectively treated if caught in the early stages.

My advice to all men, don’t be a hold out, get regular check-ups as a preventive measure.

My father was a survior of this same cancer.
He lived another 6 years, then colapsed and died in the doctors office one day.

I hope the best for your dad and you.

Got some good news. The cancer has not spread, it is only in the prostrate. They started hormone treatment yesterday. They are going to start Chemotherapy in November. It does appear to be somewhat aggressive, but the outlook looks good. Pop was in very good spirits when he called last night, and we planned a fishing trip to the coast for this fall.

Thanks everyone for the prayers!

The truth is that prostate cancer is one of the easiest treated cancers if detected early and treated.  Best of luck to your dad.
