12 gauge slugs
« on: October 16, 2009, 04:16:28 PM »
I bought some winchester ranger 12 gauge reduced recoil slugs. Out of an 18 inch barrel the one ounce   slug    clocked at 1138 fps and was much more pleasant to shoot then a standard slug .
Has anyone used this ammo. Any thoughts good or bad about its performance.
It would work fine I presume on  deer at 50 yards

I see winchester winlite smoothe bore slugs advertised showing 1200 fps velocity.
This is a very similar or maybe even the same load ? Anyone have any  experiance with these rounds ?

This is not really  a question about slug guns. More about specific brand slugs out of a smoothe bore.
Hope its ok to post here.

I've shot the Winlite reduced recoil slugs (I'm pretty sure they are the same as the Ranger).

Out of an old winchester 1200 they shot very well.  At 75 yards w/open sights I could consistently hit clay targets.

These slugs should be fine for deer hunting @ ranges up to about 75-80 yards (if they group well out of your gun).

....And you're right, the recoil is very mild compared to standard velocity foster slugs.

I just got a bunch of ranger low recoil slugs. Shot some on a combat course messing around. They do feel a whole lot easier on the shoulder. I was planning on tricking out a slug gun with these slugs and a scope for my son on the upcoming youth deer hunt weekend but ran into a problem with the scope rail. I looked into the ballistics and I'm very confident with these slugs for deer up to seventy yards.

The Winchester LE 1 ounce reduced recoil (1200 fps) slug is my 13 year old daughter's favorite in a open sighted single shot NEF smoothbore slug gun. Excellent accuracy (4" @ 50yds) and less than 20 gauge recoil!  The same gun centers Federal LE Flite Control 8 pellet low recoil 00B into paper plate size patterns at 30 yards.

Both slug and buckshot load have the same payload weight and velocity - 1 ounce at 1200 fps.
