Knght Elite/Extreme BH209 Plug.
« on: September 26, 2009, 04:10:30 PM »
I got my testing of the plug done this morning. I'm only going to recommend a few changes. The flame channel to be drilled out to 5/32 like the Savage plug. And the vent-liner to be brazed in the plug so it cant be removed. And also make a FPJ version as well.

I shot the plug 25 times today. 140grns of BH209 and 150grn bullets in my 45cal Knight Elite. This plug is really clean and NO blow back at all on my scope. I put a piece of white cloth around the scope to check this. I will post more pics later when i take the plug out of the gun.

Here are pics after 25 shots.

I too would recommend the 5/32" flame channel, and thread it for a vent liner. I have some custom plugs with those measurements and a .242" - .243" diameter primer pocket with a flat bottom that have no blowback. If you want to get rid of the blowback in the Knights, you have to have all the right dimentions. I don't look like you are there yet. Put a liner in it, that way you can customize your flash hole without ruining your plug. The liners in my custom plugs are .031", and ignite BH209 with no blowback, even using heavy charges.

If he is going to make a FPJ plug, DO NOT use that heavy chamfer on the O.D. of that nipple like on the standard plug. All that does is splay out the FPJ and spew blowback all over. I know Knight put it there to aid in moving the FPJ into battery, but it doesn't really need it. The flame needs to be channeled into a larger diameter flame channel than the standard 1/8" that Knight uses, or the flame channel taken out of the equasion.

One thing is for certain, the .45's definitely have more pressure with the magnum loads that the .50's.

The primers should be slightly (.003"-.005") long before the bolt is cammed all the way down. This action will compress the rim of the primer, making the front seat up tight in the bottom of the primer pocket. Just a few of the things I have discovered in the quest to get rid of the blowback.

The standard NFPJ Knight plug also does not have a deep enough primer pocket, this allows the back part of the primer to swell and stick in the adapter when shooting mag loads. The very large diameter firing pin and firing pin hole in the bolt doesn't help matters, allowing soot to seep between the primer and battery cup.

Let us know when they get it figured out.

I'd like to maybe try this. I bought a used Knight original disc & someone had previously drilled the BP hole larger. I will measure the new hole but it may be in the 5/32 ballpark. What is this 'vent liner', what do they look like & where does a guy get one? Do you have to put threads in? or use some other method to secure? I thought since this BP is in O.K. shape otherwise it would be a good testing plug. I have some other unaltered plugs I was planning to use, but wouldn't mind testing to reduce blowback. Thanks

After talking with Dave alot of changes are being made like i already mentioned. The plug should be just about 90% blow back free when done. The red plastic jacket plug wont be started until this one is done.

I'm having a great amount of trouble blowing sabots on my .45 knight disc, I'm loading 80 grs. 777 over a 180 XTP, knight brown H/P sabot. Any suggestions would be greatly appeciated?
I shoot 28 gauge sub-base wads under my 50 cal. knight with great results, 300gr. XTP, black H/P sabot.

Switch to the blue Harvester sabot for your 45cal ML and you will be fine.
