TEXAS RANGER TALES AND LORE
« on: September 24, 2009, 08:12:40 AM »
Some may know, others may not even care---I like the lore of the Texas rangers, their exploits being the stuff of history, and, they are true.
True? Well, they have the truth in them and no Texan is above a little embelishment. ;)
I have studied and read just about all of anything that has too do with Texas History and the Rangers. there are many characters and rangers of renoun--full of fire and grit--and none of these boys are a bad study, from R.I.P ford  too Historian Walter Prescott Webb--all good reads.
One of my personal favorites is a gentleman by the name of Charles "Charlie" Miller. Miller spanned the era of the old border Rangers and the Neueces Strip too modern Rangerism.
He is not the greatest or the most storied of any ranger but He is a-typical and His legend is well documented.
I hope this link works and that you boys enjoy the read.

As usual the links don't get you there completely.
Click on Gunsmoke and go too page four (4)--you will find Charlie Miller at the bottom of the page.

williamlayton..

Great stories for sure grew up in south east texas and remember many stories from my grandmother and other older relatives. The rangers struck fear in those the were after and garnered nothing but the highest respect of those they protected.

I always wanted to be a Texas Ranger...   8)  But I was to short... That and the fact I didn't live in Texas...  :-[

Yup... even had a name picked out; Texas Dick Slaughter.   :)  Wait...  ???  maybe that was the French Foreign Legion that let you pick your own name...  :-\  They wouldn't take me either...  :'(

I swear you told the story, once, about being in the Legion in Nam. It was a good story and you were the hero but you got killed.

I've heard you have to be born in either Texas or Tennessee to be a Texas ranger.......

We recently buried a very good friend who spent 35 years as a Texas Ranger.  Sid Merchant worked out of the Abilene, TX office for many years, I spend a good bit of time with him over the years and spoke with him regularly after he retired and moved to Oklahoma.   He once told me that there was only one thing that could motivate an Old Ranger to move to Oklahoma, that was grandchildren.  Sid shared tales of many of his experience with me over the years, he led a quite interesting life.

I think ever Texas Ranger and Law Officer for miles around attended Sid’s funeral, I would guess there were over five hundred.  The funeral was conducted by the Texas Ranger Chaplin, the grave side services were a combination of a Masonic service, remembrances by old friends and a military styled display by the DPS Honor Guard.

I also had the pleasure of spending some time with Joaquin Jackson in Alpine, TX several years ago.  His daughter in law is the curator of the museum at Sul Ross University, they had a display there on his life and he was promoting his book “One Ranger.”  He is also a very interesting man.  He recently loaned his collection of Winchester to TSRA for display at their new offices in San Antonio.  I haven’t seen it but understand it is one of the finest individual collections around.

And while on the subject of Texas Rangers, if ever in the Waco, TX. area don’t miss the “Texas Rangers Museum.”   You can spend hours there drooling over the firearms.  You won’t find as many beautiful 1911s with so much history any other place.
