209 primer question

What are the "coldest" 209 primers?  Shooting a .45 SS Disc Extreme these days and it is a lot dirtier than I'd like (and the most accurate rifle I own!).  Probably 90+% is blow back from the primer.  Shooting Winchester 209's right now.  Also thinking of opening up the flash hole 1 or 2 number drill sizes.  Just toooo much fire with no where else to go.......

Don't try the T7 primers!! They blow crap all over everything!!! I wouldn't open up the flash hole. The pressures from the chamber could be dangerous to say the least!!! You would have way more blowback from the powder!! I know a guy that was using a sidelock and got the idea to drill out the nipple so the charge would get more spark!!! When he shot it, the charge going off accually cocked the hammer!!! And he shot it again, But this time it broke the hammer!! It best to use these things as they were designed!! I would try some different primers. until you find something you like!!!

 What powder you using? I'd say one of the 'reduced flash' M-L primers.

Winchester used to be clean, but they have change their manufacturing to a different factory and they are now awful dirty.  I have bought some CCI based on my gun stores recommendation but have not tried them yet.

  I had the same problem . My BP in my Encore was getting clogged with carbon and then i was getting a ton of blow back . I cleaned  my breach plug and fired 15 win primer through it ( no powder) and my breech plug plugged with carbon again that only a drill bit would remove. The first 10 shots  are fine then the blow a starts . I also  feel the flash holes are also too small for that much primer . Also once you get the blow by ,  the the flame will eat away at the metal in the primer cup and it will get worse and worse(.mine did ) I decide to stop messing with it and have stopped buying the VERY PRICEY Bh209 ( 39.00 here ) and now use 777 ($ 24,00) with the .25 acp conversion . NO MORE blow buy , and a 100% seal , clean  breech plug  , firing pin and receiver .  I don't mind swabbing with one wet ( spit) patch and a dry between shot . Its good to let the barrel cool anyhow .  I drilled out my breech plug as you want to do and it worked and it did NOT   increase the blow back from the powder,  it did  decrease the blow back from the primer though .  I decided to stop spending soo much more for ( less)  powder and switched . I find shooting 777 to be less trouble that Bh209 . The store in town stopped selling BH209 so i would have to pay HM fees , just not worth it . IMO

Well I had problems with tripple 7 powder in my prohunter using the regular winchester 209 and also the ones made for tripple 7. I even contacted T/C and they sent me a new breach plug to try and it didn't make any difference. I bought a .25 breach plug from a member here and before I even tried it I happened to purchase some blackhorn 209 at bass pro in myrtle beach last summer. When I tried it I never gave tripple 7 or any of the pyrodex products another thought and sold the breach plug conversion and gave away the tripple 7 that I had left. I use 120 grains of blackhorn and a 250 grain shockwave and I don't have any problems with blowback or swabbing the barrel between shots. Yes it costs more and I did have a little touble finding more of it this year, But I wouldn't want to go back to tripple seven I believe if I couldn't get the blackhorn I would get a smokless muzzleloding barrel for the encore.

With the disc "open bolt" design, it is enherently a little dirty.  I use the FPJ's.  I too shot 10 primers empty and the breach, bolt and scope bottom were filthy.  If a 25ACP conversion were available, I'd go with it in a heartbeat!  Unbelievable clean in mama's Sidekick.  I've heard Remington has a new ML 209 out.  I'll try them if I can find them...BTW, we shoot Pyro RS.

Since you are shooting Pyrodex, and you were thinking about small rifle primers (.25 ACP conversion) you could try using small rifle primers in the VariFlame 209 adapters.

Did that Reese, had 10 and liked them.  Bought 20 more, loaded all 30 up and off to the range, 7 went bang, 23 went click.  Thought I was onto something at first.  They worked great in my Omega, and mama uses 25 ACP's.  Probably has something to do with the FPJ's.  All were dented nicely,too.  I'd recommend them, just not in primer carrier rifle.

I have a .45 cal Knight DISC Elite and I am using the non-FPJ breech plug.

The Winchester 209 shot shell primers fit nice and snug in this breech plug.  I get some blow back from the primer but never enough to reach the scope.   The load I use is 120 gr BH209, 200 gr SW and tan .45/40 sabot.
