The sales job the Bush administration did made it seem like it was more concerned with middle-east countries, but the real reason was that Russia is becoming a threat once again, and they wanted something to protect Poland. Poland is interesting because it poses few military obstacles because it's flat, and it is considered by many military experts as being an important location for wars that fit likely scenarios today. This capitulation by Obama is a very serious matter because of the Russia issue. It's a real victory for the Russians, a military victory.
