Sight radius?
« on: September 24, 2009, 11:46:54 AM »
Is there a formula to figuring trhe sight radius on a rifle, handgun, or shotgun? How do I go about choosing the correct sights to mount on a firearm that never had them before? I don't own a laser bore sighter, but I'm thinking that one might help me with this? What do you think?>  BTW the gun in question is a mini 14 target rifle. Thanks.   jammer

I assume you mean the height of the front/rear sights.. There is no real formu7la but half the diameter of the barrel at the point the rear sight is to be mounted and ha;f the diameter of the barrel at the muaale will give the mounting surface to center bore height for each. Sheck the adjustment range of the rear sight anduse the lowest height to determine the hieght of the total front sight,. this is spread between the ramp and the blade. There is also a deflection formula that gives the bullets movement on the target for a given movement in the sight with a specific sight radius. That formula is avalable on the Brownells websight.

Heck I always thought the "sight radius" was the distance from the front sight to the rear sight! and the longer the sight radius the better the accuracy was apt to be!  ::)
