Would you wear a taser bracelet to get on a plane?
Dan Morrill (Program Director CityU of Seattle) posted 3/23/2008 | Comments (24)
Wacky security ideas come out all the time, today's wacky security idea comes from Firearms training systems. They have proposed a patent on a bracelet that would be controlled by an airlines cabin personnel, that if a passenger got unruly would allow them to taser them into submission.

This technology has practical applications for drunks, disorderly, small screaming children, anxious passengers, or the occasional terrorist, TSA flight personnel, or Air Marshals.

Todays Security has many layers, should those layers fail there is one last line of defense- the EMD Safety Bracelet, patent #6,933,851. Lamperd Less Lethal has entered into a manufacturing agreement to develop and manufacture this product for world wide distribution using our current technology and expert knowledge in this field. Source: Firearms Training Systems

You can view the patent here. Some interesting commentary is here and here.

The question would be, would you get on a plane if you had to wear a bracelet that would literally allow a random event or person to taser you into submission. What happens if there is a cranky flight attendant and just wants the passengers to shut up? Air Marshalls would have to wear dummy bracelets otherwise their cover would be blown.

This is one system that could be potentially rife with abuse, because tasing someone with a heart condition, or other medical condition could be very bad. There is also some lawsuit potential here if a person is tased without due process or many warnings. Plus you would have to make sure that only authorized personnel could put the bracelet on or take it off. Then you would have to make sure that the bracelet actually works and that the battery is not flat

That's and "interesting" idea. Some people are just a bit more enthusiastic than others when it comes to security inventions.

Hmmm, a taser bracelet activated by the cabin personnel to shut up small children. I can see it now, "Sir, please shut your obnoxious little grandson up or we're going to taze that little SOB into submission." Somehow, that doesn't sound like such a good plan.

No MS, I wouldn't wear one of those and neither would any of my family members. They couldn't pay me enough to fly on any of the airlines. I'll just take my car or truck if I ever need to go some place distant in the future.

wouldn't it just be easier to have each passenger strap on a parachute? Once the seat-belt is buckled, the Cap't. hit's a button and that's it!!....your in. Get unruly and Cha-Ching....Ejector button to the "staging area"....drop to 15-tho feet, and bye bye!!!

Seems to me on the risk scale.....'bout the same as those zillion volts going thru your heart's electric system.

But....I'm no Doctor.

absolutely not....and I doubt it will happen.  Can you imagine the first law suit from a heart attack or some other aggravated condition?  I know taser's don't usually cause these.....just saying.   The first time they used one on a child.....Katie bar the door.

Wont fly and have not since I retired from the boats (before 9/11) but definitely would not wear one or fly unless my children's life depended on it

May never see Hawaii again in person but I'll survive!

If they might be going this route, then handcuff everyone.
As in "Con-Air".
But, what just were those security people drinking.....or smoking ?
I won't fly.Because I don't like the idea of being treated like a criminal,or terrorist.

Flying was way too much hassel before 9/ 11 ,no way I would fly today. Prices are high service stinks. If I can't get there by car , I won't go.

If you are deep enough in the pocket you can charter something a lot smaller and friendlier.

I've flown too two places in the last two months. Once too Seattle so my wife and I could take a cruise to Alaska (first time on a cruise) and a second time to Durham North Carolina, Duke University to attend my nephew's wedding.

The TSA doesn't make you feel like a criminal. If anything, they do a fine job making you feel safe. In fact, they do more than make you "feel safe" with the track record of not having any terrorist attacks since 9-11.

Commercial flying let's you see more of the USA. Hardly is it expensive when you compare it to gas, hotels and food. Heck, we flew from Pittsburgh Pa. to Seattle via one stop in Atlanta in a day. You just can't do that in your car. We booked it 3 months in advance and it cost $325 each. Unless your living in a tent and driving a motorcycle, you just can't beat that cost....and we were there in a total of 7 hours.

I'm not going to let the rag heads win. I'm flying when I have the pennies and I plan on seeing this grand country before they burry my bones.

It would take a major emergency for me to ever fly again.

Since 9/11, going on a flight is one major hassel after another.

I'm a 53 year old man with a Kentucky accent,..yet I have to take off my shoes,..stand with my arms outstretched and be inspected with a metal detecting wand.

The last straw was when I went up to the desk to ask when my flight was due. It was late and I was going to have to be in time for a connecting flight at the next stop or make other arrangements. The guy at the desk said he didn't know, than asked me to step aside and be checked with yet another metal detecting wand.

I had already passed through security and been selected for a random "wanding" that day. I was already inside the waiting area at the flight gate.

It's gotten ridiculous.

I'm not going to pay hundreds of dollars to be treated like I'm in a prison.

I fly quite a bit for both business & pleasure. I would never put on such a device, never. That would be the end of my flying days.

What sucks is being active military travelling through a MILITARY air terminal with my family of six.  I have a TS SCI clearance and I still get inspected like an animal...  Okay, you'll give me a gun and tell me to guard the airfield with my life but I can't fly without being inspected?  Doesn't make a damn bit of sense...

I recently flew through an airfield that will not be named and they handled it right...

That airfield didn't have any x-ray equipment.  They do a quick hands on search of baggage.  They had me lift my jacket and turn around.  They had me drink out of my coke bottle and they put us on the plane.  Common sense ANG boys said "Hell we ain't worried about you... even terrorists don't blow up their WHOLE family."
