38 special in 357 mag GP100

i shot a couple boxes of cheap winchester 38 special in my ruger and it gunked up the cylinders so bad i couldn't load a 357 round in it. tried to clean with hoppes#9 and wire brush, wouldn't touch it. finally had to chuck the brush in my drill and put fine grit lapping compound on the brush to remove it. worked but i won't shoot 38 special in it no more, i will down load 357 from now on.

i have 2 GP 100 357's, never had that problem using 38's..............

i never had tha problen  and do  it  often

but  have heard  of  it....guess   you proofed its not a myth

I suppose it can happen, But I've shot thousands of .38s out of my GP 100 with out a single problem, Its spit it share of .357s down range also.  Prolly just that paticular ammo is the culprit not that it was .38s. 8)

Maybe your lead loads are too hot or your using pure lead and not hard cast.

these were winchester 130gr total metal jackets from wally world. i didn't state that in the post sorry, i wonder if the powder used in these rounds was lil-gun. i've read where folks have had problems with it. i would think winchester was using its own powder though. the gunk in the cilinders was melted metal almost like solder.

Not a problem!

I and my family have shot many cast bullet 38 loads from my Ruger Security 6 - 4" over the years, and if/when the cylinder no longer allows the insertion of 357 loads, just take the revolver apart and set the cylinder in a container of Hoppies or?????  and let it soak over night.

Then the build up will come clean with just a bronse brush and patches.

Maybe I have done this a half dozen times in the 30+ years I have owned the gun, and by the time this is needed it will be time for a good cleaning anyway.

Easy cure and no big thing.
