New piece to be added to my Arsenal
« on: September 20, 2009, 11:40:08 AM »
Thought you gents might like to see my latest addition.

I posted some time back about  possibly getting a 1/5 scale M1841 and still plan on doing so, but it will have to wait now since this little beauty came up on EBay and I simply couldn't pass it up.

I would call it a mid to late 18th century 6 or maybe 12 pdr.    Since it still uses a manual quoin rather than an elevating screw system, it may be a bit earlier than the Gribeauval period.  I only wish the barrel had dolphins.    The pictures are from the seller.

It's a little dusty in the EBay picture, but carriage and wheels look really well executed, and it should clean up real nice

The barrel is 17.5 in. long, 70 cal bore, the over-all length is 28 in., wheels are 11.5 inch diameter, and in total it weighs 33 lbs.

Any more cannons and I will have to get a bigger place.

Cheers

Yea.  I would think a vintage French red wine bottle would have more in tune, in lieu of a black powder can.

That's not a bad idea.    I just won the auction today, so I don't have it yet.   The pictures are from the seller, and he put the soda next to it for scale.  He also indicated
that there were no maker's marks, but one never knows.    When I get it and clean it up I'll know better what I have.  I'll try to  post some better pictures then,
and if I can get some range time, give it a test fire.

Cheers

My isn't that a lovely gun.  The aged patina is very nice, I hope you do resist the urge to polish and only wash and oil instead!

Although I am partial to shiny things, I agree about the brass/bronze in this case.   By cleaning, I mostly meant treating the wood with a little Danish wood oil and probably swiping a thin film of bicycle chain oil on the metal part.  My mountain bike brand of chain oil has wax in it, so it is pretty good as a light coating on any metal.

Nice! A friend of mine has almost the exact barrel and carriage. When you get it, dismount the barrel and check on the underside of it, my friend's barrel has "Spain" stamped on the bottom, between the trunnions. It's almost a carbon copy of that one. BoomLover

I almost bid on that one. Looks nice. I'm kinda surprised it didn't go for more $$$.

You might want to consider RENAISSANCE WAX/POLISH or Kramer Antique Restorer.

I Have used the Kramer's and can highly recommended it.  The Reniassance Wax comes highly recdommended also, but I have not used it yet.

I've heard that both of those products work much better if you mix them 50/50 with BRASSO ;D

Hey guys,

The same seller that I bought my cannon from has listed another one on EBay.   This time it's a 16.5 inch Brass/bronze barreled naval model (probably a 24 pdr.)

This time he lists the barrel maker     VALLEY CANNON WORKS" FROM TIGARD OREGON IN 1982   and he used the same soda can in his picture for scale.

I'd love to have it, but my cannon budget for is blown for a while.  Anyway, I thought somebody here might be interested.

That's a very nice addition to your collection.
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

You wouldn't like it..... It's too small........ Too much patina..... Seller says it's not designed for a projectile..... It's too big......... Prolly got termites, acid rain damage, and may be radioactive.......

You don't wanna bid on something like that, do you? Let me get it so I can restore it to safe condition...
