Spray on bedliner on barrels?
« on: September 27, 2009, 07:38:44 AM »
Ive read a lot of old posts about using spray on bedliners for the stock and forearm and think they look great from the pics I have seen.  Just wondering if it would be ok on the barrel and receiver.  I would think so but I am pretty new to guns and worry it would mess with the barrel harmonics or keep the barrel from cooling as quickly as it normally would or maybe im just paranoid.  Oh I plan on getting the survivor .308 if that helps at all.

I wouldn't recommend using it on the entire barrel, even some of those using paint have had problems getting the action to lock up after a paint job, it can interfere with fit under the chamber in the frame, due to the thickness of the bed liner, I'd expect it to be an issue.

I was expecting something like that.  Thanks.  Is there something I can coat the barrel with to protect it better.  My stainless puma got soaked last week hunting in the rain and I worry about the blueing on the survivor.  My cleaning and oiling regimen prob needs to be more in depth cause I seem to get slight surface rust my blued guns which is why I switched to stainless.

Short of a coating like Duracote or an expensive ceramic coating, a good corrosion protectant is the best choice, I use Eezox but Breakfree CLP is also good and a lot easier to find locally.

I would not use bed liner, too heavy and thick.  I recently had it sprayed on the lower portion of my S-10 pickup.  We live out a gravel road and the big tires were throwing gravel to the point it had eaten all the paint off behind the wheel wells.  No way I would put that on a gun.

Now I did use the Rustolium Textured paint on the metal surfaces of my 30-06.  Stopped the rust, and makes the gun easier to handle with slick or bloody hands.  I also used the Rustolium Accents paint on the wood.  Makes the wood look like stone, is real rough and also helps in handling with slick hands.

I have also used Rustoleum and Krylon on several barrels and have been very happy with the result. Makes for a good tough finish, and easy to touch up if needed ;)
I don't believe I would use a cheaper brand though...

Like myarmor said, it's easy to touch up.  I still have the partial cans I worked from, so when I need a touch up just a shot does it.  My gun takes such a beating it gets a touch up about twice a year.

Since I hunt a lot in snow, my Ultra .223 in off White Rustolium Textured paint.  No shine or glare either.  Also my Mini-14

Duracote is my first choice for paint. But you really need to follow the directions to the letter. On my blued firearms I give them a coat of paste wax at the start of season. It turns moisture real well, If the innards get wet them clean them out with a water replacing spray, Once I start hunting season I don't like to take a firearm apart (for obvious zeroing reasons). After season is over I clean the outside and action religiously the bore gets a light swapping and a final patch with a light machine oil.

I have heard of people using synthetic motor oils, but have never tried it.

I use Johnson's paste wax on all active firearms (not the range goers).  It is carnuaba wax without abrasive cleaners in it.  Can get at WalMart in the Chemicals department next to mops and brooms normally.

If you apply it and don't buff, then it is dull, matte look and is slightly tacky.  I like it for grip and rain protection.

I did seven guns with Duracote, was very disappointed with the results.  We followed the directions to the letter.  After we finished let them sit for two weeks before we touched them, so it was well cured.  Finish is still easily nicked.

I use the wet sandable dark grey primer from Rustoleum.  If you spray it on a properly degreased firearm and let it sit for several weeks to cure, it gives you a very matte, and durable finish.  If you like I found you can also lightly rub it down with 0000 steel wool after a few weeks and it looks very similar to blued metal.  I used it on an old Remington that had some slight rust and pitting on the outside of the barrel and made it look almost new again.  I touch it up every year as I tend to get small nicks in the barrel from hunting in a metal stand, but the nice thing is it looks new again every time!  All for $4 at walmart.

If you are looking for a Stainless steel type finish there is a product called Steel-It that is spray on and has actual Stainless steel pigment it is very durable I have used it on a few guns dries very hard .It is used for machine coating in food manufacturing plants were caustic and harsh chemicals are used for cleaning. I have used it for yrs at work .Gives you a matte finish if it has a draw back for gun use it is that even trying to put it on light you still get about 3mil thickness but does not hurt firearm function . Do a google search for steel-it can be purchaced from manufactureer or McMaster -Carr I think it's probly near $20 a can but will do many guns or bbl's. Kurt
