Stimpy, Quick,Larry question for ya.

Or anybody else who knows.

In the wildcatting forum Eddie has ask about modifying a .243 to use a rimmed case the 7.62x54R in making a 6mm rimmed handie.

I got to thinking maybe a .307win case would work. So, Do you think getting a reamer and cutting a rim in the .243 would work as CW did to his .308 and then necking and fireforming the .307 case to the .243 chamber?   If so do you think it could be done by hand?

I think all that is needed would be cut the rim and modify the extractor.   Also what if you cut a .243 AI chamber to gain a little more case cap as I think you would lose some with the .307 case.

If I am thinking right you would still be able to shoot factory rounds in it if need be.

Am I thinking this out right or is my head screwed on crooked as usual? ;D

It sounds good to me, all except the hand reaming part which may or may not work, but if it doesn't go well you could always clean it up with a 6-284 rechamber.

Guys have been doing that very thing with T/C Encores for years now.

In fact there are some that have modfied the extractors so they work with both the rimmed and rimmless cases. As per the Rimmed .243AI using a Rimmed .307 Winchester as the parent case, that is exactly what Don Bower did to create his .243 Super Bower (ie Rimmed .243 Improved) and Don even did this on the Contender Platform.

JD Jones for his 7mm JDJ #2 used the basic .307 Winchester Case, necked down to 7mm and then fire formed into an improved version of a rimmed 7mmx307.

I would think to just make your .243 Handi Rifle into a Rimmed .243 using .307 Winchester Brass necked down all you would need to do is have a machinist machine a counter bore in the breechface for the Rim of the Cartridge and modify the extractor. On a different note necking the .307 case down to .243 you may or may not have to turn or ream the necks so they do not get to thick.

I have been thinking about doing the same thing with a 7mm-08.
Midway has the reamer listed. It is special order though.

The rim is just cut on a lathe, the 308/243 ejector will work with both rimmed and non-rimmed versions, so use whatever you like.  Only advantage to using a rimmed cartridge would be to headspace it to fireform some cartridge that could not headspace on the sholder for some reason.  Larry
