How short to cut Sidekick barrel ?
« on: September 11, 2009, 01:08:41 PM »
I bought a "low Dollar" sidekick (from a member) for My 10 YO son.
I cut the stock down 2" and now want to cut the barrel down.

The Rossi "Mini loaders" have 20" Barrels, I was thinking some where between 18"-20"
This will be a 100yard MAX gun, 60-80 grain powder, 300gr keith nose bullet.

Would 18" affect 100yard and under shots ?
Also I will be losing the dovetail miter for the ram rod holder, is there any after market ram rod holders? (bolt on, strap on ?)

Thanks,

Slack

check the ballistics  of pistol barrels

i would keep the rod holder  where  it  is cause  i am lazy
too  mush  work  and too little difference  in  18  and 20
if  i understand what your saying

still  have to re-mount the sight

any barrel length  is legal  on a muzzle loader [pretty sure]
a  12 inch [re-lengthen  the stock  with a pad]  once  he out grows  it might  be  cool

i  love  shorties of  any type

Using a scope on it.
Think I may cut it to 18"
Can a gun smith add a QLA or false muzzle to aid in loading ?

I have a miniloader in .45 and it does not seem to suffer at 20" with the short stock.  In fact, when I put a slip on recoil pad from limbsaver, it fits me well, yet can still hold it in my hand with the barrel down and not hit the dirt.  I have used a white mtn carbine with a 21" barrel for years and did not feel undergunned.  I think a 20" sidekick would be perfect.  Not sure about the ramrod thimble, but perhaps try to cut just after it and recrown.
