1/48 rifle Barrels

Well I know it might get booted but I have to ask I live in condor country, now the inline people have 1/28 &1/32 twist but you all have 1/48 & 1/66,70 twist barrels have you ever shot the inverted rain coats with a 185 or 250 grain Barnes bullet $$$$${pricey S#%^t >:( Shirlock} and if so how did they shoot or do I need to get a new barrel?  TIA Nim

Well any "Bullet" (minnies and Maxi' included) require a faster twist than a round ball just by it's shape and aerodynamics.

 so pretty much anything slower than 1-48 in 50 cal and up,,mite as well forget,,there is always some odd-ball that comes up with some miracle patching or lube and claims supurb accuracy, but if it where the case, they'd be on the market!

I know some guy's personally that have had some luck with 1-48 twists. The guy's over on the modern should be able to help. I feel your pain man,,Damn Californication Regs!! And, how's a guy sposeta find a good combo with out spending 200 experimenting!! Good luck

1:48 with conicals is no problem at all.  Sabots might be iffy but you will never know until you try it.

247gr Thor  (Made by Barnes)  90gr 3f goex @ 100 yards. It takes 110gr Pyrodex RS to equal the accuracy of Goex in this rifle.

These are pure copper Conical  bullets,

Have you looked at the Lee R.E.A.L. bullets?  Lots cheaper.

:( I'm so sorry to hear that.  :(  :(  :(  I guess if you're stuck with rules like that, ya gotta do the best you can with some other metal.  Brass comes to mind but that's probably more trouble than it'd be worth.  I'd also be thinking about a bigger bore using patched round ball STEEL rounds.  Steel, brass, bronze, and copper all have about the same specific gravity, which is roughly 3/4 that of lead.

In kg per cu meter:
lead 11,340
steel rolled (i.e. mild steel) 7,850
nickel 8,800
copper 8,930
brass 8,400 to 8,700
bronze 7,400 to 8,900

Ya gotta be able to find ball bearings, cheap, that correspond to some big caliber... and shoot them with patches.  It's well accepted that the patches engage the rifling and impart the spin.  You'd need thicker patches and a smaller steel ball of course than using the lead equivalent--probably 20 thousandths or so I'd guess.  I'd go that route, which your 1/48 ought to handle fine, and put a nice charge behind it.  Then you can afford to practice with the same rounds you use for hunting.  This whole sabot thing is driving me nutty.  I just got an Omega, and I'm thinking of trading it before I've even fired it.  In fact, I think I'll go put up an ad.

Sabotloader it can be anything but it cant have any lead and brass bullets are the exception they have a small % of lead which is ok for now.I am going to check on the Thor rounds and see.
  They just passed a plumbing law and the lead content in brass for your faucets is too high and they have to make them now with a even lower % of lead which will make them very britle I think. ::) fausets are on sale now if you live in Kalifornia get them while they last. ;D

fine tune the diameter  with patch thickness

you  ever shoot double balls?      ..i  like that  load   saw  one deer killed with it

how  about lead free  plumbing sodier  in  a conical  mould
might be expensive  but so  is living in kaliphornia

1/48 barrels are most found in the newer model flints and caplocks.  It is a tweener twist that can shoot sabot/bullet, and round ball well.  I shoot 3 inches w/ my flint using 250 grain TC cheap shots w/supplied sabot at 100 yards over 80 grains of Goex.  I don't use BH209 in my flint lock rifle because of the high igmition temeratures required, but do know people that are using the T7 in them.  You should do okay w/ any saboted bullet if you get the load siaze correct.

my  t/c  is  1/48

it likes the 370 grain  t/c maxi bullet  i cast for it

if they made that law  here  i would cast  them with plumming soulder

not sure what they would weigh  with that alloy  but sure its close enough

only draw back  is it may be  too  hard

and carry  the soulder packaging with  me.......along with copy of the  MSDS
