Indiana State Park Deer Reduction Applications Available

Applications for participation in state park deer reductions are available at www.indianaoutdoor.in.gov. Two reduction efforts will be held-Nov. 16-17 and Nov. 30-Dec. 1. Application deadline for both is Aug. 28.

State park deer reductions are held specifically to reduce the ecological impact from white-tailed deer in certain state parks. Details are available in the 2009-2010 Indiana Hunting and Trapping Guide, available at retail stores and at www.IN.gov/dnr/fishwild/2343.htm/. Potential applicants should review details in the guide before applying.

Biologists evaluate which parks require a reduction each year based on floral recovery and previous hunter success. The state parks are home to more than 32 state-endangered plants. The reductions help maintain browsing by deer to a level that helps ecosystems recover throughout the state parks.

State parks conducting reductions with firearms are Chain O'Lakes, Charlestown, Harmonie, Lincoln, Ouabache, Pokagon, Potato Creek, Prophetstown, Shades, Shakamak, Spring Mill, Tippecanoe River, Turkey Run, Versailles and Whitewater Memorial.

State parks conducting reductions with archery are Fort Harrison and Clifty Falls.

  I hunt in Charlestown. Although I haven't hunted the State Park there, I have heard that it contains tons of deer.  There are a few Urban Legends about a "World Record" deer living there that has mesmerized many a deer hunter so much that they couldn't lift their guns to take a shot.  

 I believe that's part of the old Powder Plant. If you hunt there, just remember "if you didn't drop it, don't pick it up."

One thing I just noticed Dinny, the application deadline appears to have been Aug 28. Wished I'd payed more attention to that before I posted. Sorry about that. Your additional info might make the original post worth keeping (I'd like to be mesmerized by the monster world record), but if you want to, feel free to remove the post.   I saw that too. My thought is that perhaps it will be new to someone.  As mentioned elsewhere, there's still IN deer hunters that don't know we can use pistol caliber rifles. This will be our 2nd year for it, too.  I'll modify the post. It's also a great place for others to post their success of these "special" hunts.

 As far as the state park in Charlestown. There are tonnnnss of deer in that place. I have seen photos of heards running thru that place back when it was the powder plant.

 I built a house across the street (62) and saw the herds myself.  That's when I heard about the Monster from kin of the farmers who have cattle there.
