Taurus SS .22 Magnum Revolver Brass Extraction Issue
« on: January 01, 2010, 04:01:25 PM »
I recently purchased a Taurus SS .22 magnum revolver for my wife.  The gun is fun to shoot, however, the ejector rod will not push the fired brass cases out of the cylinder.  The rod will easily push live ammo out of the cylinders, however, however empty brass can only be removed by hitting the top of the ejector rod with a plastic tipped hammer and forcing the empty cases out of the cylinder.  I've only shot approximately 50 rounds of Fiocchi 40 grain JHP .22 Win Mag through the revolver so far and I'm reluctant to shoot it any more until I can figure out what is occuring.  I don't want to take it to a gunsmith without trying out easier solutions at less expense, etc.  I'd appreciate any thoughts or suggestions.

I would try out another brand of ammo. Try out some Winchester or CCI. If they gun does not work properly with CCI or Winchester than I would send it back. I would also give it a good cleanning as well.

Thanks for the advice regarding different ammo.  I've cleaned the gun and will try it with something different.  I've seen Winchester ammo at Sportsmans and will give that a try.  Thanks for the advice.

I have a dan wesson 22lr doing this as well.  Some ammos are better than others.  It seems to be better in somer heat vs winter cold as well.  I think it has tight chambers but shoots so good I can live with it.

Maybe it is something common to 22 win. mag's, but I'm definitly going to try a different brand of ammo.  I enjoy shooting the gun and hope that an ammo change will solve the problem.  Appreciate hearing that someone else has a similar problem and thinks an ammo change might help solve mine.  Thanks again.

One of my favorite loads in 22 Magnum is the original 40 grain JHP Winchester. It is a good load and has always done well in my Ruger Single Six. So has the CCI 40 grain HP and TMJ.

I have owned several DA revolvers over the years in 22LR caliber.  They were mostly S&W with a couple of colt diamond backs thrown in for good measure.  All of them had extraction problems usually after a couple of cylinder full of rounds. Yesterday I bought a Turus Tracker 9 shooter and I put about 140 rounds through it of two different brands with no ejection problems.  I was actually shocked that I did not have ejection problems like you describe.

It sounds like extraction problems, possibly related to a particular ammo and weather, or both, are fairly common for 22 magnums.  I was not aware of that.  I do appreciate everyone's advice and efforts to help.  It has been beneficial.  Thanks to all.  I'll go to school on all the advice.

Let us know how it works out. The 22 Magnum is a good little field handgun and a lot of fun to shoot. The 40 grain CCI TMJ has some pretty good penetration for a 40 grain bullet too.

I have a 941 22mag as well . I think ejection problems are common because 22's burn dirty . I have more problems with 22lr's than 22mags .However if I put a 100 or so mags through my 941 it gets sticky . Same in my Charter Pathfinder 22LR .

Try giving the chambers a good scrubbing with a very tight patch and JB's Bore Paste. They may be a little rough, gripping the brass once it expands in firing.

Polishing with JB paste is a good idea and try CCI +V ammo with the nickle cases. They are harder, smooth, and have less friction. When mine gets hot they still stick.

Remington 33 gr accutip-v work fine.  I'm also going to try some CCI Maxi-Mag HP+V JHP 30 grains the next time I shoot the gun.  The Fiocchi rounds don't seem to work in this particular gun.
