Sourdough- I can tell you from experiance shooting Angus bulls that run between 1,800-2000lbs, a 17HMR BT and the 20gr will go all the way to the brain with a frontal head shot 1/2 way between the eyes and the horns and I have done it many times at 20-30yds. I will go one better, the Aguila Super Max 30gr round nose @1750  will do the same also but leave a bigger hole. I don't know how thick a bears skull is, but a bulls skull is THICK. I have a dog that can stop a chargeing bull RIGHT NOW, and if I was using either one of these rounds on a bear, I would want him there also!
I know that neither one is a stopping round, but neither is any round that comes out of a pistol.

Qaz - I have seen the simalar thing with frontal shots with a 45-70 with a 405-gr JSP bouncing off a bison's skull tween the eyes, but yet the little bullets going a bunch faster on the FPS will penetrate like no ones business.

I can understand a 405 grain bullet bouncing off of the skull of any animal......but only if the 405 grain is traveling at too slow of a speed for the intended purpose. You CAN get the MV of a 405 grain up to 2,000 fps from a modern action Lever gun (Marlin).

Now, that's a lot of energy for that chunk of lead and I don't know if it's going to bounce off of any North American animal's skull. Unless the animal is 300 yards away when it's hit.

I know this is off topic, but I believe that it is relevent.  This past week I had the regretable scenario of having to shoot a rottweiler.  The dog came after myself, my wife and my two year old son while we were on the front porch.  I just happened to have my 10/22 next to me when it happened.  I was shooting the cheap winchester value pack ammo from Walmart.  The dog took 8 shots in the front of the chest before it decided to run off.  The first shot was at 8 yds.  We measured the closest track from the dog to be only 4 yards from where we were sitting.  This was a 130lb dog.  I would hate to think about trying the same thing with a bear.

Yep, I agree with ya here on this one.  Do you know if the dog turned up some place, taking a dirt nap?

The dog died in my ditch about 50 yds from my house.  The owner came looking for it and I showed her where it was and even loaded it in here truck.  She cussed me out, tried to press charges and is now trying to sue me.  All this after being attacked on my own property by her dog.  If I ever have to shoot a dog again, I'll drag it off in the woods and play dumb if anyone comes looking for it.

Is there a leash law where you live.  Here vicious dog at large will die of lead poisoning, as I've already done on one occation myself but used a .35 Rem on that one.

There is no leash law.  We live out in the country in central MS.  I live on 100 acres that I own.  My property is surrounded on three sides by larger tracts of land.  Across the street, there are about 5 houses on half acre lots.  The dog came from one of these houses.  If my dog had done the same thing, I would have been upset, but I would have apologized to the people that the dog came after.  She kept saying how the dog was not vicious and how he loved kids.  Was I supposed to let the dog maul my two year old before I had a reason to shoot?  I know the women loved her dog, but I can garauntee that I love my son more.

I know in the state I live in and the area, although we have leash laws, if you shoot a persons pet you better be ready to answer to the man(Police). Unless you can show the actual damage that the dog did or prove that it was chaseing your livestock, you are in deep doo-doo, period. You have just shot someones pet and that is a criminal act in most states. If you do shoot it, it better still be on your property and right where you pulled the trigger on it. Always remember, pets head for home when hurt, you don't want him to get there! Shoot, shovel and shut up!

As I said before I carried my .460 with me till the bears went in.  Now I'm back to only carrying the .223 Ultra again.  Bears are all denned up now.  Beaver are still working the area, they keep the ice open near their lodge.  Now I'm calling as well as running traps.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Actually in my state, dogs over thirty pounds without a collar that are on your property are fair game.  They are considered to be a nuisance because we do have a problem with rabees in MS.  I didn't know this until after the fact.  I was actually pointed out to me, by my lawyer and the police officer that filed the report.  This will not change the way I treat dogs on my property though.  I have many different dogs that have wandered through my property and have never even considered harming one until this incident
