Does Anyone Know......
« on: December 12, 2003, 11:50:51 AM »
I was given a Ithaca 40M lever action single shot the other day, along with a few other rifles, handguns and a shotgun.  What can anyone tell me about the Ithaca?  I remember seeing them in catalogs and in stores but I not able to find out much about it now that I have one.  This one is in 90% or better condition, any idea what it may be worth?  Lawdog

Ask Jerry over on the Gunsmithing Forum. Bet he can help you with it. I've seen them and that's about it. If you can't get anything else I can type in what's in the Gun Trader's Guide about it for ya.

Lawdog :  Is there any chanch the rifle in question is a model 49m instead of a 40m as blue book dont show the model 40s if a 49m it will have a value of $100 in 95% + 15% for the Mag. cal. hope this has been of some help BTW mfg.1961-1978 Martini-style action. :D    JIM

Jim,

It might be.  The lettering stamped into the barrel isn't the deepest I have ever seen.  Sure looked like it says 40 though.  It's not a magnum as it is very readable ".22 short, long, long rifle" on the left side of the barrel next to the action.  The sights on it are nothing to write home about.  Personally I think they need to be changed to maybe a peep rear and something better for the front.  Do you know of a rear sight that would fit in the grove on the Ithaca?  Digging through my catalogs I can't find anything.  Lawdog

Lawdog :  You might try calling Brownells on the sight that would be my first place to start, BTW the M that I put on the model # was in the book for the 22 Mag. version, but none the less I had one of those rifles about 23 years ago ended up giving it to a neighbor who didnt have any thing around the place and he kept it in his pick-up and used it when out checking cattle, I never shot it and cant remember him bragging about it either, but he has told many people about me giving him a rifle when he didnt have one, made me feel good to have helped out at the time, let me know if you find out any more on that rifle. :D    JIM
