209 versus #11 caps
« on: October 26, 2009, 09:28:46 AM »
I sure hear a lot about the 209 primer setups being dirty and too powerful (pushing the load out of position before ignition) so what is so special about the 209 deal? I have never had any issues with the #11 caps, Never a misfire with various traditional and semi modern inlines (50 cal Firehawk and 54 Traditions Buckhunter).  If I were to buy an Optima Elite with a 50 caliber barrel  and use loose powder, pyrodex and black would I have these well noted problems.

they are hot and reliable and will set off pellets. + with Blackhorn 209, you have to use an even hotter 209 to set it off.

You just have to fiddle around with primers. I like Winchester 777s and Winchester W209 primers the best in my cva muzzleloaders. You'd be fine with the OE and 209 primers.
