primitive weapon
« on: October 18, 2008, 11:09:19 AM »
i am thinking that maybe in january michigan could hold a primitive
weapons season. hunting during this time period hunters would be limited to, longbow, recurve, or sidelock with roundball and open sights.

how do you guys feel, you believe this could a suggestion worth presenting to  the dnr ,or just say good thought and leave it at that.dan

I wrote a letter to DNR a year ago asking them to consider taking some time out of a 3 month bow season to create a Primitive Season, side hammers, iron sights and long bows...........never got a reply to my letter. It is amazing how much interest they have.

Just marry yourself a Native American gal & you can go hunting together for 1/2 the year. You can also use any weapon day or night.

somebody would find a way to get around the primitive part and introduce something high tech to it like they did with bows and with our current black powder season. Cant see why the dnr just doesnt extend the existing rifle season. There isnt much differnce in hunting with an inline then a centerfire rifle anyway.

the state should consider how many more license it could sell if such a program was put into place.

Don't think to many really.
I wouldn't buy one cause I can't see good enough to use iron sights.

Many others wouldn't cause they would get to cold.

A few more wouldn't cause they couldn't bait.

others wouldn't cause they couldn't use a inline or compound.

And then there are those who filled all their tags in the other seasons hunting with what they wanted.

Long bow and recurve in bow season.

Long bow, Recurve, Flint lock and Rock lock in rifle season and muzzy season.

I really don't know why we need another special season unless it is for the spear chuckers and the stone hammer throwers.

I agree.  Take your recurve during the 3 month bow season.  Don't ask to take time away from other bow hunters.  Take your flintlock during muzzleloading season.  Do you run into a lot of people shooting the deer you saw cuz it's too far for you but not him or her.  I doubt it.  I really get a big kick out of people whining that Michigans bow season is too long or the firearm is too long.  Crap like that gets it all taken away.
Ask for more, never less, cuz once they get it they won't give it back.

My December hunts are with my long bow.  I would love to hunt on into January with it.  I have yet, in 25 years here, to kill a buck in the last season, but I love hunting and taking my freezer meat (does) in December.  There just isn't anyone else hunting much, so the atmosphere is great.

personaly i think they should lump them all together and have a nov 1-30th hunt. Give a gun a buck and a doe tag and no other tags and let him take them with any weapon they choose. The hunting regulations in mich have gotten way to complicated as it is. Our property is split on the border of two deer management areas and some years what legal on one side isnt on the other. With an extended deer season like that a guy would probably tend to pass on smaller bucks knowing he has more woods time to find a larger one and that would eliminate the need for quality deer management areas. Plus with the doe tag he would be about guaranteed he could take meat home and that to would ease up on the shooting of small bucks. The dnr has put all these funky regulations in there for one reason only. To sell more tags. They could care less about the deer herd. I had to chuckle last year. Opening day i only saw 3 does. My father alone had 4 doe tags! Fortunatly hes not one that will use them. We take one doe for camp meat and toss the rest. I cant believe the dnr actually does deer counts. If they did they wouldnt be issuing any doe tags up here right now.

Having doe tags doesn't cut down on the amount of small bucks taken. Ever hear the if it is brown it's down, I have and seen it many times. It is if I don't shot it some else will Horray for me and let the other guy worry about his own self.
Idiots can't tell a button buck from a mature doe,Or do they really want to.Talk about having a special primitive season then turn around and complain about the DNR only worring about making money on sales, Whats that????

I'm not a fan of special seasons based on your hunting tool of choice. I think the seasons and bag limits should be set based on best science of how many critters need to be removed from the herd and let folks decide what tool they want to use to do it. If you really want to use a truely primitive weapon no one is stopping you are they?

Here in Bama we can even use spears legally should we want to.

Fully agree with you on the science behind making hunting decisions.  I just plain love to hunt with my long bows, recurves, or self bows, so any excuse to stay longer in the woods is good for me.  Plus, here in southern MI, even though we take several does off the farm I hunt, we hardly put a dent in the population.  Last year, while removing stands in January, I stopped counting does and yearlings in the mid-30s that were filing out of the swamp to the picked corn fields on top of the ridges.  Don't agree with the if it's brown it's down theory as we try to not shoot small bucks on the farm, including buttons.  The results are pictures and sightings of larger bucks than we've ever seen.  This is not a large farm and we have hunters surrounding us, but some of those small bucks will survive and be larger next year.

Best of luck to all this fall.
