Rust on a Brand New 10/22 rifle - Is this Common?
« on: October 04, 2003, 06:22:19 AM »
I just bought a brand new 10/22 and found that it has rust on the top of the receiver, right where a scope would mount on the flat part all along the top.  It turned an oily white rag orange - I think it must be rust.  Has anyone seen this before?  I bought it brand new in the box from a big chain store.  Perhaps it had been sitting in inventory awhile?  Any suggestions on how to condition the top of the gun, perhaps some fine steel wool?  Maybe I should reblue that part?

rust on top of the receiver?? unless ruger SEVERELY changed the design of the 10/22,  that should not happen.....

Aluminum does NOT rust (does not turn to ironoxide).  my guess (having not seen the rifle) would be that either, that was some form of grease on it (this is what i truly suspect) or that rifle was not as "new" as they lead you to beleive (even if they DID bring it out in a box, you can put one back in a box).....

if it was EXCTLY in the area where the scope mount rail would go, i'd suspect that someone put the rail on receiver and the gun got left that way in moist environs.

like i said on a 10/22 the receiver is an aluminum block, the color comes from the Anodizing process (same way a MagLite gets it's color, and surface hardness) so it should NEVER rust, and because of the anodizing be fairly resistant to oxidation of the aluminum as well.

something's fishy here,   if it WASN'T grease i'd be getting ahold of someone in chage at that store kinda pronto.

BUT i am seriously betting on it being a orangish colored packing grease..  was there a small translucent orange "smear" on the inside of the plastic pouch the gun should have been in inside the Box??

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I didn't know that the top was aluminum! LOL!  If that is the case then it must have been packing grease.  I do have the black finish on the gun - not sure if they make a silver one or if one is steel and the other aluminum....?  Anyway, if the black finish is aluminum I feel alot better!  It must have been grease.  I cleaned it up and the finish seems good and smooth, not like a rusted surface.  Thanks a ton for the reply! :D

Both are anodized aluminum..  the "stainless" (aka silver) version simply uses a process that gives all the other qualities without the coloration, then a sealer is applied

and don't worry too much about not knowing....  it's just one of those things, the 10/22 has been part of the US shooting world for so long that we barely think about how it's made any more.  it looks like steel feels like steel to most, so most asume it IS steel. common ans completely non-fatal mistake.....

at least you didn't call up ruger raising cain     now THAT would have been a "aw heck" when they told you!!  lol

Yep, I'm kind of a beginner.  I do know alot about how to shoot since I was in the 101st airborne for four years but when it comes to civillian guns you can say I'm a newbie!  Thanks for the comments.  I just got my scope in and I'll post a photo soon!

IT CAN RUST

I just visited the Ruger site and Low and Behold it says that the receiver IS steel!  This is a quote from their site:

"10/22 Magnum Rifles:
The Ruger 10/22 Magnum rifle offers rugged features like solid steel receivers, which are machined to accept Ruger scope rings. The Ruger scope mounting system allows for rigid mounting directly to the steel receiver."

It seems that it is possible that the receiver can rust!

Which do you have? a 10/22, or a 10/22mag? The 10/22 is aluminum, and the 22mag is steel. KN

yes my response, ONLY applies if the gun in question is a regular .22LR  10/22

the 10/22Mag  rifle DOES have a steel receiver....

i simply assumed that since you said, the following,
Quote
it has rust on the top of the receiver, right where a scope would mount on the flat part all along the top.
that the gun was a 10/22.

since the Magnum version does NOT have a flat receiver top, the 10/22Mag has milled in scope mounts that are part of the receiver, that accept the ruger rings.

IF the gun has a flat/smooth topped receiver it SHOULD be a regular 10/22 and not a mag, and therefore aluminum.

Yep it's the magnum.  I still think it's probably packing grease since after cleaning it up good the finish is very nice.
