I am going to apply for a Pennsylvania License to Carry Firearms permit next week sometime. It seems pretty straight forward and cheap to do. Here in Pa it costs $25.00 for a 5 year permit. I just have to do it through the sherifs office. There are a bunch of states that will accept my permit if I should travel to them. The reason I am getting one is because I am a contractor and carry a good amount of cash at times. The other reason is because I work all over Pittsburgh and let me tell you I have worked in some real bad neighborhoods. I will feel much better knowing I have a gun in my glove box. Dale

I see on your profile your sre from Scottdale which would mean you are a Westmoreland county resident.  The reason I say this is due to the ease of which one can pick up his carry permit...In fact I believe Westmoreland county does it as it should be with no wait (a VAST difference from Allegheny county).  You go into the courthouse in Greensburg and head downstairs to the Sheriff's office.  Just outside of his door he has a desk set up that handles permits.  The gentleman that was there before was a hunter and it took me more time to get done BS'ing about hunting than it did to get my permit.  They also take the pic right there to make it easy on you.  The Sheriff has also recently put up satellite offices in the county so you don't even have to go the whole way to Greensburg if you are closer (and the hours are until 6pm for us working stiffs).  Here is the link and a link to the form to fill out. Hope this helps.

3 Cheers for a sheriff that "gets it"!  Way to go Sheriff Chris Scherer!

Here is the forms link (fillable online, just print it when you are done)  http://www.co.westmoreland.pa.us/sheriff/cwp/view.asp?a=3&Q=616486&sheriffNav=|35203|

I showed them my NYS permit. They took my picture and gave me and my wife our permits. A man came in while i was there and they told him they didn't do the photos there and didn't know where he could get one done. It looks to me like it is anyones guess how they will handle out of state.

Everyone here should have a carry permit.  I carry every day (ruger LCP with Crimson Trace Laser) and hope I never need it.  However, I would rather carry it every day and never need it than need it and not have it.

Dale,

I don't live far from you. Getting a CCW from the Sheriff is about as easy as falling off a log. As long as you don't have any criminal past (and who would apply if they did??) and you don't have any protection from abuse orders outstanding against you (and again, who would apply if they did??) then you will get one on the spot.

Spend the few bucks (and I can't recall if it was $12 or $20) and have them give you the one with your picture on it , and it's laminated. It's just like a drivers license. Fits easy in your wallet and won't get messed up if your wallet gets wet.

Just go to the Greensburg Courthouse. Oh, leave your pocket knife in your truck glove box. You gotta go through security.

I hope this helps.

I have no criminal past so I am sure it will not be a problem at all. Next day I get rained out or get a short day I will be headed to the Greensburg court house. It now costs $25.00 for 5 years and I think that is a good deal. Dale

No problem at all Dale I have had mine for years, self defense. I like the new laminated one better than just the old papre ones you had to fold and stick in your photo sheeve so it would get destroyed in five years. ;D

They laminate them now? Mines the older paper style, got it back in 2007 seeing as I'm in PA a lot hunting. Very easy to get for a non resident...sent the Centre County Sheriff a check and a copy of my Ohio conceal carry license. 6 day turnaround, very nice!
