Win. M1892 in 44-40 WCF or 45 LC, 22 in or 24 in BBL ?
« on: September 04, 2009, 11:47:32 AM »
I am fairly new to GBO and seek advice of well informed website members.
I see that Davidsons has some Model 1892's lever action rifles in take-down versions from USRAC/BACO/Miroku (Japan) in both 44-40 WCF and 45 Long Colt calibers; the 44 is offered in 20" and 24" tapered octagon blued barrels (as well as nickel 18.5" round barrel John Waynes).  I have preferences for 24" length barrel and 45 LC but that combination is not offered :(.  So which might be the best compromise?  Although 45 might not have been an original caliber, ammunition appears much more available at lower prices (perhaps in mostly loading levels for revolvers, which I have none), and 44 ammunition seems to be less available at higher prices.  And 24 was always more than 20, right?

I may be wrong but you dont sound like a handloader ?  If you are I would go with the 44/40, remember thats what Lucas Mc Cain shot, ( Chuck Connors  The Rifleman ).  The 45 colt is probably more versatile and alot cheeper to shoot if you buy factory loads but if you load your own there are handloads that will match the 44 mag out of a modern M 92 in 44/40. ???? What to do,  I 'd go with the 44/40.

Actually what Chuck Connors shot was what all movie cowboys shoot five in one blanks that fit the chambers of five different cartridges. Now that rifle might have been chambered for the .44-40 aka .44 WCF.

I went with a .45 Colt ( I don't handload for that one) - and use CorBon +P commercial loads for deer hunting.

IIRC, some other non-cowboy loads are available from other companies also - like Buffalo Bore, etc.

I can't attest to it as fact, but have heard that some non-original Winchester Model 92's are problematic in .44-40, accuracy-wise due to differing bore specs.
Those reports, however, are related to the European/Italian M92 clones - so I don't know that a Miroku/Winchester would also have issues in that chambering.

DC, The reason the orgional 92s were not chambered in 45colt is because the old ballon head 45 colt cartridges had such a narrow rim that extraction was not reliable. Modern 45 colt rounds don't suffer from this problem.

I'd buy the 45colt.  ;) and enjoy.

Keep it real, get the .44 WCF!   8)

There are advantages with the .44 WCF when using blackpowder, the thin case walls of the bottlenecked case will expand to seal the chamber so that fouling does not blow back into the action. 8)

Thanks guys,

2 for 44 and 2 for 45...:)  I am going to have to defer that Win. 92 decision until later, sort of... ;)
