What do you consider to be a high round count for an AR-15?

What do you consider to be a high round count for an AR-15 or any other rifle for that matter?

From time to time I look at used guns and always ask the guy selling it if he knows how many rounds have been fired through the rifle.  I generally want to know if the gun has been used and abused and a round count gives me some kind of an idea as to how the rifle has been treated and used.

I always figured an AR gets broken in after the first 100 - 200 rounds.  At what point or number of rounds do you really start to scratch your head and wonder if this is a good rifle to buy?

I'm asking this because I may have found a sweet deal on a 20" Hbar online with about 500 rounds through it.

i know my old colt has well over 5k and all its had replaced is springs and its basicaly like new. biggest wear item on them is probably barrels if you are the type that likes to pull the trigger fast. this one has been taken care of but i do have a dpms sprotical with probably 2-3000 rounds that ive abused and it still is in top shape.

I have several AR's with many rounds through them with no problems. 500 rounds is nothing to worry about. If you like the gun and you think it is a good deal I say go for it.

If the bbl. is chrome lined, 10K is no sweat. If not, it really depends on your bbl. and how hot you get it. 5K should be no problem.

John R. is right. Bushmaster I believe said 15,000, on their chrome lined barrels. I have the M4, and they are match grade chrome lined barrel and chamber. It no doubt will out last me.

ie put thousands of rounds down my military M4 and it still shoots like a charm, and alot of that has been shooting the rifle very fast without letting it cool down.

Before it jams...  (when there isn't oil in it)

I'm interested in when people think an AR is wore out, looses accuracy, or needs parts replaced.
