From looking at both at the range IMO the Monarch is more like the VX III.
RIP Mike. Died on July 14th, around 2am, with his family at his side, he went peacefully to be with god.

I don’t know Nikon's customer service, but I do know Leupold’s and they are superior.

I would buy the Leupold VX-II without even considering any other optic with all things considered, quality, customer service and price.

I like the Leupold in a variable. There customer service is good. I have one variable Nikon, and one fixed 4. The fixed 4 power Nikon is older, I have had it 25 years I guess, and it was used when I bought it. It has good crisp glass. The later Nikon variables I don't care for.

I would buy the Leupold.

I've looked thru several Nikon scopes at the range to include the Monarchs. I've never been impressed. I've never owned a Nikon scope, doubt I ever will. I've heard too many mixed reports on how well they honor that supposed life time warranty.

For the money you're talking about and chosing only between the two you list I'd go with the Leupold hands down.

Nikon, but check the eye relief if you are mounting it on a magnum.

Nikon Monarch if it has enough eye relief. My experience is opposite of Bill's. Each person's eyes are different.

You are very right! As for factory service, if you want a reticle changed, Leupold is the way to go. I have never heard a legitimate complaint with Nikons warrantee service. ;)

Then you didn't read the post a week or so ago where they refused to repair one without being paid.

From what I have heard word of mouth, and seen to a limited extent, I would say Leupold's are more durable,  Nikons a little clearer/brighter.  I have several Nikon Monarch/Buckmasters on my varmint & target rifles, Leupold's on my big game rifles.  Burris makes a good scope for the money as well.

I second that.  You need to be comparing the VXIII to the Monarch.  I have had both and clarity definately goes to the Monarch.  The buckmaster is more along the lines of the VXII.  As long as you are shopping around, you should check out Sightron as well.  The Monarchs and the Big Sky's give Leupold a run for their money.

The only scope I ever use on a big game rifle is a Leupold Vari-X II, in 2x7.  I love them .  I have never had a problem with them.  Most of them I have purchased USED at large gunshows, for about $125, and I have never had a problem with a used one either.

I will say that on one of the used ones I bought, the adjustment ring was very hard/stiff to turn.  I just sent it back to Leupold, and they repaired it for free and returned it to me in 10 days.  No other issues.

I had both. Found the Monarch is more crisp and the eye relief is comparable with the Leupold II. You probably can't go wrong with either but I noticed the Monarch's are getting quite pricey lately.

I have about a dozen Leupolds.  They get my vote.  Had some compact Nikon binocs once.  Brought a rifle a few years ago that came with a Nikon scope.  I called the seller after receiving the rifle (through my dealer) and he said he had removed another scope and stuck the Nikon on to assist with the sale of the rifle.  He had never shot or sighted the scope.  I kept the rifle and sold the scope based on the fact that he wanted to get rid of it.  I also had three Leupolds begging to get out of the closet.
