Are you ready?
« on: October 27, 2009, 06:43:16 PM »
The 7th is nearly on us. My dove hunting fix is wearing off and I'm about to bust waiting on muzzle loader season to start. I got the Encore sighted in yesterday... well, verified the scope was still on. I've got everything packed and ready to go. I hit the road tomorrow morning and am supposed to be back home next Friday. After that I hope to fill the freezer again. Am I the only one about to bounce off the walls?

Old Yard Dog and I already started with a camping/bear hunting trip to South Cherokee back on 10/2/09 thru 10/6/09. I got my first black bear on opening morning. She wasn't the biggest but a trophy to me anyway. It was a young female 47" nose to tail and weighed 125#. We still hunted closed forest service roads and I was about 2 miles back when I spotted her walking up the mountain. A 25 yrd shot with my Marlin 1894 .44 mag did the job and then the real work started with  getting her to the Jeep. I'm going to try to post a pic. Lonnie.

Well it looked like I posted the pic OK. I'll be going here on the farm this weekend with my 14 yr old daughter if the weather cooperates and she will try to get one of the bucks that are walking around here. Good Luck to all, Lonnie.

We now call Lonnie "Teddy Bear". That .44 did a realy good job on that bear.

Congrats Lonnie!! I've always had a weak spot for a 44 mag myself.

I found out last night I have lost my hunting spot for the year. :'(  The owners son is being a real a$$. So much for the '09 season.

I have been hunting up in Hawkins Co. To be honest, I'm not overly concerned about it though. I've had a few things kind of fall through in the past few months. Maybe this is Someone's way of letting me know I have other things that require my attention first.

I was ready and so was my Savage Muzzle loader, my first deer with a ML, always used a rifle previously. Shot this baby at 165 yards and the 250gr Hornady XTP did a number on her. I need to take some time off work and get serious, now I know that a ML is dependable deer harvester!!!
Photo shows exit wound, lungs were just mush. My first time with the internet check in too, slick as a button.

Good job Old English. She should eat well. No luck yet for me but I decided to stay in and hunt the rest of the week. Maybe I'll get lucky and put some meat on the table also.

I finally made it out this morning for the first time this year.  The wind was blowing so hard I almost got back in my truck and drove home.  I went out and sat at my stand for an hour and could not handle the wind anymore so I decided to take a walk about down a logging road and look for sign.  I had a doe run past me with a buck hot on her heals.  I went running off into the woods after them hoping they would circle back around me.  A few minutes later, here comes that doe and she stops 20 yds from me and he comes up right behind her and sticks his nose in her backside.  They never knew I was there.  I shot the buck with his nose stuck to her backside.  He was a nice 5pt.  As I was dragging him out, she came back around looking for him but I was unable to get a shot.  After she ran off, another buck ran after her.  The rut is on.

Nice buck, good story. Yeah, the rut is on. I've seen deer every day but only got one decent shot at one today and got a yearling doe this morning. I've seen an 8 pt buck, my son has seen a 3 pt and my daughter saw one chasing does this afternoon but we are having trouble closing the deal. Oh well, there's always tomorrow. Again, good job, Lonnie.
