What is a good factory 44 mag deer ammo?
« on: October 03, 2009, 04:10:58 PM »
I just picked up my first 44mag pistol today and am really excited about using it for deer this season.  What is a good factory ammo for me to buy for deer?

While at the store, I picked up some general MagTech 240 gr JSPs.   The box says 1178 fps.  How will these do on deer out to 50+/- yards?

What do you recommend I buy in the future?  It'll have to be factory for now b/c i'm not into handloading yet.

thank you

I guess my first question is, what kind of group can you make at 50 yards with it, using full power loads, and a hunting position?

I shoot handguns a lot, this is just my first 44 that i've owned..i've shot others'

I will be able to hit a pie plate at 50 yards with no problem in the field...i do shoot with 2 hands.

That's great...  Then, any 240 grain bullet at around 1200fps will do the job, if you do your part.  I prefer my own "hard cast" in my 44's.

Uncle Elmer recommended JSP's to those who didn't reload in his day.

They must be alright.

Lots of good off the shelf ammo will work. I think probably the most popular is anything using a Hornady 240xtp. Hell I have killed few of them using 180 grain bullets with no problems. Your MagTechs will work just fine. What kind of 44 did you get?

What you bought is fine. I run 240 gr xtp. You probably want to stay with a 240 in case a quartering shot is offered. I ran 180's years ago in a rifle and had a few tracking jobs with solid quartering hits so switched to heavy bullets to get a good pass through.

A jsp will expand larger than a jhp of the same weight/caliber as long as the jacket thickness and lead composition are the same. I reload so never tried the magtech in 44, but you will be fine in using it. Odds are it uses a bullet from rem/win/sierra or speer I would imagine. I have run some of their other calibers  and they were just as good as the other brands. You may want to hunt up some 44 special rounds for practice. I run a 200 gr hard cast at low pressures for target. Those 44 mags put a whompin on ya.

I have only used my own handloads for my model 29 S&W with 8-3/8ths barrel! I use a Sierra Hollow Cavity bullet going 1300fps and it will make a very impressive wound channel in a deer out to 50 yards.

I believe a hunter should be able to hit a 6 inch target at 50yds before trying to take a deer at that range......Just my own opinion gents!
