sbuff:  welcome aboard.  I don't know what you may find at Kittery in the form of Mausers but let us know if you stop there.  I corresponded with those folks once, a number of years back, regarding a WWII souvenier German revolver, and they were polite and friendly.  HTH.

Years ago I was stationed in Boston MA.  When my wife and I could afford it we'd take the kids up there and "Go on a date", to be honest my wife is more addicted to fishing than I  am ( and brother, thats saying alot! ;D) she would ogle the "Panther Martin" isle like they were jewelery! :D  Well anyway, we'd stop at the roadside lobster stands on the way home and eat our fill for cheap.  I'd look up in the rear view mirror to two snoring boys with lobster druil running out of their kissers all the way home.

Hmm, it sure is funny how just the mention of a place can bring back so many good memories 8), its equally perplexing how being that poor could have been so much fun ??? :D....

  Thanks for reminding me!

I went to kittery today,I picked out what I think was the best one.I have gotten alot of answers on the NEF page.I was hoping to get some mauser info,I have 6 Enfields and this is my first mauser.

on the right side of the reciever its stamped Preduzece 44 {I think its a yugo mauser} then mod 98.

left side of the rec is stamped G5482,not sure what that meens?

At the end of the barrel its stamped k98 german 8mm.Then under that its worn but maybe says  cal 6t a1r vt? not 100% sure as its worn.

The bolt number is 6549

The action is bar far one of the best I have seen.Paul Mauser sure new what he was doing.

Any info on this would be great...

Thanks,
Steve

The Preduze44 is the Yugoslavian Factory 44.  I don't know if this is the BRNO factory or not but Preduze44 reworked many of the VZ24 rifles (best of the 98 military Mausers they say) and they can be found as the VZ/CZ 24/47 and the VZ/CZ 24/52.  They also produced the M48and M48A.  I have a M48A (that I really enjoy) and a VZ/CZ 24/52 (that I haven't done much with except clean it up and admire the new bore...).

The G5482 is probably the new serial number given the rifle after it was reworked at the factory.  The factory sets bolts and rebarrels, at the least.  My M48A was purchased as unissued; the VZ/CZ 24/52 received a new barrel and a new, or at least different bolt.  HTH and enjoy your Mauser.

the M98 refers to the design of the rifle. It refers to the set of improvements mauser made to the bolt rifle from about 1891 thru 1898. There were changes made after 1898 but they didn't warrant a new designation. The Vz24 is just a designation for the variant or version of the M98 made by a manufacturer. The Vz24 is a M98 mauser made by the Czecks.. Mausers have been made by many nations, even the U.S. used the 1903 Springfield amd paid a royalty to mauser for using its designs. Even the Brits were in the process of changing to a mauser derivative the P14 when interupted by WWI. The P14 and it's new cartridge would have suplanted the Enfields but the war and its attndant demands elimnated the cartridge change and the No.1 and 4 etc. just soldiered on.. The G-prefixed number on the receiver is likely the serial number of the rifle in its batch.. Many tens of thousands of these rifle were made and I've not seen serials over 4 digits as they were recycled as the batches were finished, so not a true unique serial number..

I have been stopping at the Kittery Trading Post every year on the way up deer hunting since the mid 70's.  Each year I try to have enough $ put away to buy an old time deer rifle.  Over the years they have had tons of old Savage 99's, Winchester 94's, Remington 81's, pumps, Mausers, Marlins, lots of old time eastern deer / bear rifles.  Huge selection.  Some of my better finds have been a 1st year Winchester 9422 in 22 mag, a couple pre-64 #94's and #70's, and a nice Browning bolt (FN Mauser action) in .270 win.  Recent years, there have been less and less of the old time stuff, prices have gotten way higher.  That said, the still have a hell of a selection.  Plan on spending half a day...Then deep fried clams and chips for lunch at the Clam Hut, at the far end of the parking lot..:)

What you have is a German 98k 8mm mauser that was captured from the germans and reworked at the yugo preduzece 44 factory.  On one side of the receiver it will say "MODEL 98" and on the other side it will say "Preduzece 44".  The bottomline is its a german 98k with the german markings ground off and restamped with the yugo crest / preduzece 44.  I have one too and its the best 98 bolt that i have(smoothest).  We purchased this german mauser at the yugo price.  Its like a Sino Soviet SKS.

Any pics???  Mine has a metal cup butt plate and a laminated stock, the stocks may vary from what i have seen on the  yugo/german 98's.

Its actually a Model 98k    thats a 98 action and the k means karbiner (carbine short barrel)

I purchased mine after looking for hours in a local C&R gun shop.  He had every mauser that was ever manufactured from every country.  It was very hard to pick just one.  This Yugo 98 caught my eye as the best looking / feeling action and for just $79 over 35 years ago it was worth it.  A few weeks after i went back looking at the mosins and i picked the finnish m39 for $89.  I didn't have a clue as to what i had until Mikey/SS told me what they were. Back then there wasn't much ammo around  in 8mm mauser or in 7,62x54r too.
