Handi trouble, need info from handi guru
« on: September 26, 2009, 08:41:00 PM »
Looks like previous owner swapped barrels,  holding the gun in your hands you can wiggle it up and down a little, hold it up to a light you can see a gap between the barrel/reciever( enuff that 2 pieces of soda can will fit kinda snug )> So I cut a shim, place it around the pin and it closes nice and snug until I put a spent hull in the chamber, then the barrel dont want to close enuff to lock up, remove the spent hull it works fine( good and tite) remove the shim and the barrel closes as it should but the gap is back.
What am I missing here???   I noticed that the very back of the shell dont set in the chamber perfectly fush with the back of the barrel, it sticks out just a tiny bit but I assume this is normal, but dont realy know.
I'm guessing that my problem is something to do with barrel/reciever but what do ya'll think????

You are saying hull - but this is a rifle forum - I am going to assume it is a brass case. You did not say what your case is. I am guessing here a little, but it sounds like you have two problems. A loose barrel that needs a shim and a chamber that is cut too shallow. The case should be flush with the barrel or just a hair below, not sticking out. Are the cases once fired or case neck sized only? You may need to full length size them if they are. Once fired cases will stretch to fill the gap between the barrel and the breech face, making it difficult to chamber the next time. If your case is new or full length sized your chamber is too shallow and needs to be reamed a little bit more. You can hand ream a chamber a few thousands. I did a Remington barrel that was short chambered about .011 - .012" shallow and it turned out well. Good Luck and Good Shooting

I'm no expert on Handi's, but I'm guessing your fired case (brass) was shot in your rifle while it had excess headspace.  Then when you shimmed and corrected the headspace it would no longer fully chamber because it had expanded (elongated) when it was fired when you had the excess headspace.

In other words the case sticks out because it is now too long to properly chamber.

Spruce - I was thinking the same way - I think your explanation is a little more concise and understandable. ;)

Thanx for the info ya'll,    ya'll are probably rite,I should have tried this last night but it didnt occur to me.       I dropped in a unfired round and it fit perfect, it recessed just a hair below flush with the chamber.
NOW!!!   I get it, THANX a bunch ya'll,  since I did fire this round from this gun with the "slack" inbtween the barrel and reciever it stetched the case to fit,( fire formed, so to speak if I'm correct ) thats why the fresh factory round fit correct.

So if I get the barrel shimmed rite this should fix the case stretching problem, correct???    But if I decide to reload the spent cases shot from this perticular gun what would have to be done to wind up with a round thats factory spec???  THANX AGAIN YA'LL.

Read the barrel fitting info in the FAQs, you should eliminate the excess headspace the recessed case shows when it's chambered, then fit the barrel, that's all covered in barrel fitting.  ;)

I started diggin thru the FAQ's last nite, I'm gonna shim the barrel again then fire a round and see what the case looks like after that, mite give me some insight.
I'm thinkin it just need shimmed and fitted, I picked up a set of feeler gauges in order to find out exactly how much of a gap ther is.     I bought the gun to learn on and it's serving it's purpose well, after this is fixed I'm gonna do a trigger job and see what I can learn, thinkin about ordering a set of stones this week. ( I'm thinkin ceramic mite be a choice )
                                                                                    THANX FOR THE INFO YA"LL.

Just to be safe, make sure it's on an SB2 frame, someone may have put the 243 barrel on an SB1 shotgun frame, ya never know. The FAQs have pics and info on the differences between SB1 shotgun and SB2 rifle frames.  ;)

Let me ask this, teh rifle is broke open and you drop a round in the chamber,  is the small lip on the back of the case ( I dont know the propper term ) supposed to cath on ejector or drop into the chamber completely and the extractor goes into place under the lip of the case once the barrel has been closed???

I've tried to shim the barrel with a piece of soda can, fired a round and the case is stretched again.  Then tried 2 pieces of soda can and it was to tite for the barrel to close, so until I find different shim material ther aint much I can do.         any thoughts?

Let me ask this, the rifle is broke open and you drop a round in the chamber,  is the small lip on the back of the case ( I don't know the proper term ) supposed to catch on ejector or drop into the chamber completely and the extractor goes into place under the lip of the case once the barrel has been closed???

I've tried to shim the barrel with a piece of soda can, fired a round and the case is stretched again.  Then tried 2 pieces of soda can and it was to tight for the barrel to close, so until I find different shim material there ain't much I can do. Any thoughts?

To correctly answer your question, we (I) will need to know the caliber. But technically, the extractor/ejector will catch the "RIM" of the case before the case completely chambers. The variable is that on "RIMLESS" rounds like 223, 308, 30-06 etc the case can slip past the extractor/ejector and still chamber and function normally.
If your using "beer can shims" your limiting yourself to one shim thickness. Things many times are not so simple. You need real shim stock. It's available from Brownells or any local machine shop in your area. Frankly, I'm not a fan of aluminium shim stock as it can compress in higher intensity chamberings. Resulting is a return to looseness. Get yourself some good spring steel shim stock.

The cal. is 243. and thanx for the info on finding shim stock,I need some.     8 times out of 10 the round drop's rite in and seldom does the ejector catch it, but it ejects unfired rounds with authority when opened, but a spent case will usually stick. ( remedy found in faq's )
I inspected sevral new sb1/sb2's today, as stated in faq's, sb1 reciever had a ruff interior and firing pin was nearly 3 times as big as sb2,    but the sb2 didnt looked very machined inside but a lot smoother than sb1, so mine is a sb2.
A guy at work mentioned selling it but I hate to give up, it's the the challenge of fixin it rite, then to see how accurate I can get it to shoot, it's good oppertunity to learn.
So I'm gonna be drivin ya'll nuts with questions,  thanx for the input keep it comin.

Check to see if the last 3 digits of the frames serial number matches the 3 digits engraved on the lug of your barrel.  If they dont match someone swapped barrels onit.  With that much play I would expect a swap....how ebber...and as Richard says...theys is allways a how ebbber...I 've seen some older 270's on the used rack take had that much play too.  Is your frame older than 1999?  Years are also listed in the faqs correlated to the second letter of the serial.

JERRY KO,thanx for the info on the nubers, I wondered what the scribbled didgits were ther for, I figured that it mite be a i.d. number to someone at the factory who maybe inspected the barrel.   Even noticed them on the brand new ones, now I know one of lifes little mysteries.
WOW the didgits match!!!  I'm glad you explained that to me, thanx.

A guy at work let me bring home a micrometer and gave me a hand full of shim stock so this opens a new door, now I gotta find the just how close the measurements need to be,  BACK TO THE FAQ's.

This is gettin better by the day, THANX YA'LL.

SHIM STOCK RULES!!!    A guy at worck gave me some shim stock, fixed it rite up.    It mite actually be a tiny bit tite but it DONT stretch the case anymore, fire a round open it up and the empty ejects, drop the spent case back into the rifle and the rim sits nice and flush with the back of the chamber.  PERFECT!!!

THANX FOR THE INPUT YA'LL,   next...trigger job.         ( if thers somthin I'm missin let me know )
