« on: October 04, 2009, 08:40:13 AM »
The following is posted on the civilwarnews.com site:

C. Peter Jorgensen, publisher of Civil War News and The Artilleryman, died on Sept. 25 at age 68. Kathryn Jørgensen, his wife and business partner since 1969, will continue to serve the publications as Editor and Publisher.

Jorgensen was a member of the 34th Battalion Virginia Cavalry of the North-South Skirmish Association, competing in carbine, musket, revolver, cannon and mortar events. He was a former member of the 5th and 10th Massachusetts Batteries.

His varied interests and collections included military history, especially Civil War and World War II books, art and artifacts.

He was an authority on Civil War field artillery, at one time having a large collection of 3-inch projectiles and cannons, one of which he fired at the Tunbridge, Vt., Memorial Day service.

His many memberships included the Company of Military Historians, Massachusetts Arms Collectors, the New England Antique Arms Society and Council on America’s Military Past.

The funeral will be Saturday, Oct. 3, at 12 p.m. at the Tunbridge Church followed by a committal service and party, both at his 234 Monarch Hill Road home.

Memorial donations may be sent to the Civil War Preservation Trust, 1331 H. St. NW, Suite 1001, Washington, DC 20005-4761; Tunbridge Public Library, PO Box 9, Tunbridge VT 05077; or the Tunbridge Church, c/o Townsend Swayze, 56 Swayze Rd., Tunbridge VT 05077.

Mike and I had the pleasure of meeting the Jorgensens at their mountain top home in Vermont in the summer of 2007.  They both made us feel at home immediately.  We were both saddened upon hearing this news.  We extend our condolences to Peter's family and friends.

Smokin' my pipe on the mountings, sniffin' the mornin'-cool,
I walks in my old brown gaiters along o' my old brown mule,
With seventy gunners be'ind me, an' never a beggar forgets
It's only the pick of the Army that handles the dear little pets - 'Tss! 'Tss!

He will be missed. He served as an invaluable resource for historical artillery. I corresponded with him on several issues and he was a true gentleman. His knowledge was vast but his ego wasn't.
