Swede scores little buck
« on: October 12, 2009, 03:23:44 AM »
No camera present when I took a buck antelope a few weeks ago but had it with me Saturday.

This was the only day of two week season when I could hunt and couldn't get to the hills until almost noon due to road conditions.  After hunting for over five hours I got the drop on this forkhorn as he tagged along with a bunch of does and fawns.  This was exactly the situation I was hoping for as I did not have time to climb up the mountain where the big bucks hang out and no time to deal with one if I got it.  So I deliberately hunted where I knew the does and fawns would be.

M700 Classic 6.5X55, Leupold M8-4X, Federal Power Shock 140 gr. SP, 175 - 200 yds.

How's this for an arm's length, self-portrait?  It only took three attempts to get the buck in the background.

Last year I had an antelope and a mule deer with the Swede but blew the only shot at elk.  Looks like I can attempt a Swede trifecta again this year.  First day I can hunt elk is this Saturday.  Maybe I will have recoverd from dragging this little buck 3/4 of a mile to the truck.  Thank goodness for the snow! ;)

Swede goes after elk tomorrow after letting the first two days of season pass with me sitting in meetings in hospitals.  :-\

I am hoping for a cow or small bull.  I am really focused on a trophy meat animal.  Saw a huge 6X6 bull at the processor's when I dropped of the deer the other day.  It really made me think, "What would I do if I killed an animal that big?"

I hunt alone and this would be a problem.  I have no doubt the Swede could drop a big one but I do not relish the thought of packing it out.  :o

The swede is so sweet. I built one for my son on a small ring mauser action. Works from coyote to elk.
