When is fast food cost too much?
« on: October 08, 2009, 10:45:19 AM »
I have been a regular at Subway for years, but now the cost of a six inch ham and turkey sub with a drink is nearly six dollars. If I'm really hungry and get chips it's over six bucks. Six bucks was a threshold for me. It's more than I want to pay for something like that, so I go there about one fourth as often as I used to.

What's your threshold?

Usually about $8, though I might make an exception up to $10 sometimes depending on what it is.  If we're talking a real sit-down restaurant though I'll expand the budget.

Most often a buck. I kinda prefer the Burger King Whopper but those buck each Junior Whoppers are one of the better values out there in fast food these days. The local Hardee's used to offer such bargains on a rotating basis but now most of them are closed and what few are left are pricing themselves out of the market.

These days when we get burgers it's Whopper Juniors.

Before I swiched jobs about 2 years ago, I would run out to the local Subway and pick up their daily special. I seem to recall the special 6 inch was about $3.00. Occasionally I'd get a bag of chips so around $4 total. I don't drink soda so I always just grabed a free water. If I want a good burger here, we have whats called Dairy Bell. There a small joint with great burgers & shakes. I'll get their 1/4 pounder and fries its about $3.50.

My threshold is $2.00 Why?  The best deal in town, at McDonald's

  1.  A Double Hamburger (which is just their McDouble Cheese without the cheese) is $1.00.  Of course, you can get the McDouble Cheese, by why dump all of that extra animal fat down your throat?

  2. Plus, $1.00 fries.

  3. Plus (in Virginia) FREE water.

Around here at the Subway's, you can get a $5 footlong, or the daily 6" spl. for $3 bucks.

At the Taco Bell i go to from time to time, they have a chicken burrito for 89 cents, or crunchy taco's for 99 cents, all with a FREE senior soft drink.

That's the choises i prefer, depending on how hungary i am, or what i'm in the mood for.

Don't know if it's still on special but recently they had the chicken ranch chalupa's at Taco Bell for under $1.  I LOVE those things :).  The bean burritos at $0.89 (with lots o' fire sauce :D) aren't bad either.

I stopped in a subway, which is located in a convenience type gas station(called Nice n Easy) and got in line. Girl making the sub for a guy ahead of me, picked up a single slice of ham that you could almost see through and slapped in on the roll. I don't remeber what it cost, but I left and went to a grocery store that had a whole roasted chicken for $ 4.99. I ate what I wanted of the chicken in my truck and took the rest home for a later meal. The subway here is no bargain for sure. Most McD's up north are filthy. I won't eat there. Sounds like you folks have better places.

My wife and I find all kinds of places where 2 folks can eat for $10.00.  The Waffle House rules.

The old "Awful Waffle" :D.

I've been to a few that I liked plenty fine (usually prefer the Huddle House instead, though), but the one in my home town is on my off-limits list.  I had SIX orders in a row messed up there.

Ordered an omelet that for some reason randomly came with mushrooms on it.  I hate mushrooms, and these things were cooked all up into the thing where there was no hope of just picking them out.
Ordered a waffle with pecans.  Got no pecans.
Ordered a waffle another time.  Came to the table burnt nearly black.
Ordered double hash browns with jalapenos and tomatoes.  Got a regular size with no tomatoes.
Ordered a burger with no onion. You can guess what happened on this one.  Not hard to pick it off, but still, when I ask for something not to be on there I don't like picking stuff off.
Another time I was there and eating at the bar.  For some reason God only knows, they wash their dishes at a sink right there at the bar.  I'm sitting there eating and the girl has the sprinkler/hose spraying dishes and turns the thing upwards not thinking and sprays my food and drink with water from the dish hose.

That was the straw that broke the camel's back. I ain't going back :).

On the same note, when I was in college a buddy and I went to the Huddle House over in the neighboring town for dinner.  I can't remember what I ordered, but remember that he ordered something with a side of biscuits and gravy.  He ate and finished one of them, then went to eat the other and something caught his eye.  Turned the thing over and there was green mold all over the bottom of the biscuit.  Needless to say we didn't leave a tip  :D.

Both seem to be isolated incidents though.  As I've said I've been to other locations for both restaurants and it's been just fine.

Swampman definely hasn't ate at the ones around northern VA! :D

Our local I HOP is pretty good but not for no $6.00. More like $10.00 or more.

I go like GB for the Whopper Jr.
I like mayo anyway and they have a lot less greese that the rest.

When I'm on the road, I'll stop at a Wendy's. Usually they have a side menu, and for about $4 I can get a small burger, salad, fries and chicken strips. Some of them have gone up, and might run about $4.50. Still not a bad deal.  gypsyman

One thing I will say about Subway is that I like the new unsweetened tea they have. It's very good when mixed with a bit of the sweetened kind or with the lemonade.

I try to go to Subway when  can. At least I'm not eating all the fat formed into to something that loks like food at the other places. I have a value card with them that gets points charged on it so something like every 10th sub is free. I'll get a foot long and eat part of it now and part later.
