Seems there are a bunch coming home from Korea.

Korea to Sell Old US Rifles Back

By Jung Sung-ki
Staff Reporter

The Ministry of National Defense plans to sell more than 100,000 aging U.S. combat rifles to American gun enthusiasts, ministry officials said Thursday.

The plan is part of the ministry's programs to boost its defense budget, they said.

About 86,000 M1 Garand rifles and 22,000 M1 carbine rifles will be sold to gun collectors in the United States, as the U.S. government has approved the sale. The rifles were originally given to South Korea as part of a U.S. aid program in the 1950s, according to officials.

The total value of the firearms for sale exceeds $120 million.

The rifles were used by U.S. troops in the Korean and Vietnam wars before being donated to the South Korean military.

They have been mothballed for years in military warehouses, but were occasionally used in drills by reserve soldiers.

The M1s were made first in 1926 and used in World War II and the Vietnam War.

The carbines were first produced in 1941 and used during the 1950-1953 Korean War.

For 108K rifles that would come out to about 1100$/rifle.
Are they worth that?

not to be paranoid here but-
Do you seriously think the gov't is going to sell guns to the bible-huggers? Seems odd to me that they are importing 100,000 guns at the same time there are talks of sending 40,000 more american troops to the other side of the world, and we have a prez that wants to have a "private security force" To say they are selling them to raise money is B.S. in my book- the gov't just prints more if they need more.

We paid as taxpayers to buy them from the manufacturer.  Now they want a high price from us??  I say let them rot.  Were actually paying twice for them.

The european union won't send anymore guns to america to arm it any more.  Now our goverment is going to flood us with more guns.  I just don't get it.  One day they want our guns the next day there selling them to us.

Since we the tax payers now own part of GM do we get a break on the price of the cars too?

We the taxpayers just pay and pay it has to stop somewhere at sometime....

The only reason the CMP hasn't been axed is because it makes money.  I know many people buy there stuff, but for me it's over priced for what it is. Just because it wears a US mark doesn't mean it's gold. I refuse to pay what even they charge for chewed up, shot out Garands.  The ones I saw the one time I went to their store were pitted and all the stocks were cracked at some point.  Some even had orange and red spray paint all over them.  They were askingz $200 for welded up Springfields, $750 at the time for Garands, and $550 for the M1s.  I didn't stay in there long.  I'll take the $200 SKS or the $69 Mosin Nagant any day over their stuff.

I spent a lot of time at the range this year. I saw over 20 of those CMP Garands being fired. Not a single one could keep the bullets into the 6" circle at 50 yards. All of them looked like what they were: old and tired rifles that should be retired.
If you want to collect them, by all means do. If you want to shoot those rifles, and are willing to pay those prices, you need a cup of coffee and two aspirins.

Production on US made M1 Garand rifles started in or near 1936? These predate that by 9 years? I guess the Koreans not John Garand invented them? This is news to me!

You can't buy much better of a bargain than from CMP. They're all original U.S. issue and the info on their site is fantastic.

Shootable.
but with all the gun rags going on and on about the AR's I'm not too sure there is a big market for the Garands.
I have seen the M1 Carbine prices go through the roof here in CA.

Once you get away from all the plastic and aluminum the M1 is an excellent rifle. I've owned and shot Carbines, Krags, Springfields and Enfields but, my favorite is the old M1. Besides, now you have to have one for the John C. Garand matches?

Don't get me wrong I have one of each and enjoy shooting both.  I have used both in Hi power matches.
I was making a point about the gun Rags.  All have left the traditional military rifles and have embraced the AR.
including the M1A.

Last I heard, Marines in Afganastan wanted M14s? Gun rags seldom serve anyone who really counts(more ads than information), you can only believe a small amount of what they print. You've got to remember they're in business to make money off of you. Their wordproccessors go faster than the bullets they claim to shoot.

The CMP Garands I've owned were nearly new.

It ain't the product I'm against as I love Garands. It's the price they charge. The one time I went to the store I didn't see anyone buying rifles.  They would walk around and go out the door as I did shaking their heads.  This whole organization was founded to put obsolete guns in the hands of law abiding citizens so that they could enjoy the sport and be ready if millitias had to be formed.  They have priced themselves out from the average Joe now.  Many of their garands are bringing close to $1000 at the store, and I just don't see that they are worth that.  This is a tax payer program, but they seem to be more concerned to turn a huge profit for our government. Most individuals are just not going to sink that much into military surplus. I'd rather have a commercial built model at that price.  I know many have bought good rifles there, but the ones I saw were not very good compared to the $750 they were asking.  I think they are close to $1000 now.  They are just not for me.  I'd rather buy something else at that price.  I hope these M1s are not going to be more of the same.  I remember when Roses had M-1s for $89 and I wish I would have bought all they had.

I think they were marked Blue Sky Imports.  I restored one of those carbines.

30-30, if your speaking of the CMP, in the '80s congress ordered them to become profitable. Now, they must make a profit, to stay in business. One of the democrats plans for surplus(not oboslete) guns. When I bought mine they were $165 and you only got one in a life time, now you can buy all you want.

Orest, the CMP CEO, posted the the CMP had nothing to do with the Korean guns or ammo. CMP is out of M2 ball. Which should hurt Garand sales. Fed makes ammo for about $1 per shot.

As for ammo, I believe the CMP still has the Greek stuff and it is listed on their website? I bought 1000 rounds of this stuff recently and it shoots great in both my M1 and 03A3.
wreckhog, your not thinking 30.06 is loosing popularity are you, it's one of RCBSs most bought die sets?

The bluestar carbines were trash , many parts were replacement , had 2 got them for around 80 bucks out of a 55gal. bbl of cosmaline . They were pulled out put in a plastic sleeve and handed to ya at a gun show . The slide on one had the side of the spring housing missing , looked like a poor made replacement part . Both were full of sand and other trash . Where bluestar stamped the barrels some were flattened and shot poor .
If these M1's are of same quality then they may only be worth using to get a reciver to build a new gun , if that part is not worn out .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Yes, I just checked and maybe they're having the same problems as everyone else, what with most ammo going to Iraq or Afganastan?

The CMP does not send 30-06 M2 ball to Iraq/Afghanistan. They had 40 year old Greek surplus. They bought 60 million rounds of it a couple years ago. They also had some old delinked Lake City machine gun ammo. Both effectively gone now. The replacement will probably be new production which could be impacted by military contracts.

I pick up Garands and carbines whenever I can at garage sales.  There was a Garand at a GS last weekend but it was in poor shape (original Springfield) and I thought for $700 I would let someone else take it home.  It had stood in the corner of a remote coastal cabin for many years and was rougher than is any military rifle I now own.  But I was tempted.

Notwithstanding the above, it's the US dollar that is not worth much and is sure to be worth even less in the future.  So while a Garand at $1,000 or more may seem way too much, at least it's honest wood and steel.  Maybe it would be fun to show a graph that compares Garand prices with gold prices over time.
