Very unhappy with H & R
« on: October 06, 2009, 06:29:19 PM »
Greetings to everyone here. I checked to see if there was an older thread relating to my issue and didn't find any, so here goes..

I received an H & R Buffalo Classic for Christmas last year in .45-70. I finally got a chance to take it out and shoot it around mid to late August. I had a great time for seven rounds. On #8, the rifle went "click". Same sound on another pull of the trigger. No dent in the primer. I found that the transfer bar had snapped.

I called H&R and reported the incident. They promised to send out a UPS shipping label so I could box it up and return it. They also stressed that this had never happened before.

Two weeks go by - no label. I call back and they said they'd send another one. Two more weeks - no label. I call back, they say to give it another four days or so and if it doesn't arrive, they'll find another way to get it to me (huh?). More delay, no label. So I send an e-mail to the last rep I spoke with and offered to send a check for $.42 to cover the cost of mailing the label. No answer, no label. I am not happy.

So I order the transfer bar from Brownell's. I find out that instead of a transfer bar, the factory calls it a lifter-striker. What do they call the trigger, a puller-shooter? I found another website which details the disassembly/trigger job/reassembly process pretty well.

As soon as my new brass hammer arrives, I'm set to start removing the pins and getting the transfer bar replaced. My question here is twofold - has anyone else had any experience with disassembly on this rifle, and is this usual behavior on the part of H&R?

I always thought these weapons were bomb-proof...

Thanks in advance!

Welcome! T-bars are known to fail, it's one of the spare parts that should be kept on hand in case it fails, you should have just asked H&R to send you one, I dunno if Madison will, but Gardner sent lots of them out. Perklo's download link is in the FAQs here, hundreds of members here have done trigger jobs, it's not hard, just a little nerve wracking the first time, I've done over 30 so far, piece of cake.  ;) Spend some time reading in the FAQs, you'll find lots of good info there including the spare parts list. Madison CS gives new meaning to the term customer service, sometimes it's great, more often it leaves a lot to be desired, they have a long ways to go to do as good a job as Gardner did.  :-\

If the agent told you it was the first one to fail he ment it was the first one he had a call on and he probably only worked there for 3 days.  Before yours there had been about 3,000 of them fall off.  This is very common, just figure out how to replace them and you will be all set.  Larry

It would have cost a lot less just to ship them your receiver.  It usually takes about 10 days to get it back.

I had the same transfer bar problem in my Buffalo Classic.
By nature I am impatient and there was no way I was going to send my brand new gun in.
I bought the part (and a few others) from Brownells, and got  the instructions from the FAQ section here.
In 45 minutes I had the new part installed, and I had done the trigger job.  It was a little scary at first, but once the gun is apart, everything makes perfect sense, and I won't hesitate to pull another one apart.

Sounds about right to me!
