Pistol Magnum Primers for S&W 460
« on: October 07, 2009, 03:55:03 PM »
Is there a Huge difference between Large Pistol Primers and Large Pistol Magnum Primers? I am Loading for a S&W .460 using HMR 4227. I have both Primers and was wondering if I could use either. Both of my books call for just Large Rifle Primers. What are you guys loading this caliber with? Thanks....Steve

If the book calls for large rifle primers, then that's what I'd use. You may not get the burn rate or heat to set off the powder load with pistol primers. Just me, but I'm kind of a stickler where the book is concerned. If that's their recommendation, I'd stick with it.

Another thing to do would be to contact the powder or bullet company's tech staff.

Large rifle primers only! The 460 works at modern rifle preasures and this is why they are calling for these primers. Like HWD says, if the book calls for X, then use X.
