first time reloading for 270win
« on: October 06, 2009, 01:49:16 PM »
hello. i am a newbie here and to reloading.  i came across this site while deciding on a new rifle and there is just a ton of info from a lot of friendly guys.  i ended up with a h&R 270win and put a box of factory ammo through it and now i want to start shooting some homemade ones.  i am looking for a good starting point from someone that found a good combo.  i will be using it for deer and just shooting at the range becoming a better shot since i am far from a skilled rifleman.  thanks.

The .270 Win is one of my favorite cartridges. You can start with 130-150 grain bullets and IMR 4350 or RL22 and do just fine. I personally like the 150 Nosler Partition for hunting.

Couldn't have said it any better myself.

The 270 is an easy cartridge to load for, and for deer I like the 130 gr. Partition or the 140 gr. Accubond. For 130 gr. loads, 55 grs. of IMR 4350 has given excellant results in 6 different rifles. 60 grs. of H4831 would be the next load I would try. It should shoot with one of those loads. (Those are max loads, so back off a gr. or two starting out.) A friend of mine recently bought some RL17 and has been getting impressive velocity, so I may give it a try when I get time.

I load the 270 win for a Handi rifle. My favorite load so far is a 140 gr. Sierra Gameking over 50 gr. of H4350, CCI LR primer.

My favorite .270 hunting load for the deer here in SC is a 130gr nosler partition loaded over reloader22. I have used many other powders in the 270, but the rl22 was the most consistent from one bullet weight to the other. The 150gr is a good choice too.
