.45 Colt/.45ACP- Convertible Pawn Shop find
« on: November 28, 2009, 06:14:54 PM »
A couple of weeks ago I found a 4 5/8" Ruger Blackhawk .45 convertible in a local pawnshop. ($400)
It had a set of Poly/Ivory grips with eagles engraved on them.  I tried for about two weeks to like them, but the grips were too white and the eagles were engraved with a black paint outline. SO...  I sanded off the offending poor engraving and then I had plain white grips.  I lightly stained them, and waxed them.
The finished product looks like aged Ivory.  (Not too white and not too yellow)
BONUS:  The .45 Colt cylinder shoots very well.  I haven't shot the ACP cyl.

Opening day of Alabama's Deer season, I killed a 120Lb. Doe with a 265grain  WFNGC.
This pistol shoots almost as well as my 7 1/2" Blackhawk, but is much more portable.
It's a keeper.

I do need to do some photos of the Convertible.
The deer was butchered at our hunting camp.  15 adults and 3 kids ate a considerable amount of fried doe with mashed potatoes and gravy.  (We eat good when we hunt)  The rest went into the freezer for jerky, roast and Deer Burgers.

I pretty much gave up rifle hunting several years ago.  I hunt with a pistol like I bow hunt, close tight shots are the norm.  My all time favorite is the .45.  If I'm in a tree stand I like my 7 1/2" Blackhawk, but for just knocking around or ground hunting I carry a shorter barrel gun.  My new .45 carries good in my Simply Rugged 'Long Hunter' holster.  (I bought it for my short barrel .44s) I carry my 7.5s in a Rod Kibbler cross draw.
It's kind of handy to have a bunch of .44s or .45s I can carry in these holsters.

I'm going again soon.  The swamp I hunt has an abundance of hogs and quite a few deer. I nearly always have the swamp to myself, cause it's wet and muddy, and the younger guys want to hunt the more open hills and food plots.
I'll try for photos next time.  ( I have a thing for single action .44s and.45s I've got several of each)

It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed.

Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure... than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.

In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing.

I had the same gun (both cylinders) except mine had the 7.5" barrel. I am sorry I sold that gun.

My favorite load for 45acp is a 205gr polycoated, 8.5 unique. Shoots great and cheap.

That load definately sounds warm for an acp!  My buddy and I load the 215 SWC over 7.3 gr of Unique for 1000 fps from a 5" 1911 colt.  Definately not what you want to shoot in that gun for a regular diet, but it does make a good hunting round.  I used to only hunt with pistols for many years.  My eyesight is not what it was and since the injury I have developed a little shake.  Consequintly I am relearning the joys of rifles, but I do miss hunting with my pistols, but I still enjoy shooting them.  Congrats to Dan on his find and excellent hunting!  44 Man

The .45 Colt is a fantastic cartridge even loaded to Colt levels. Congratulations on finding a great gun. I'm betting the ACP cylinder will shoot really well too.  ;)

It does, at least in my Blackhawk.

I'm betting the ACP cylinder will shoot really well too.  ;)
