Where in africa is the best place to hunt cat's? lynx,caracal,serval,and genet just any cats even wild cat.

I don't think there is a best place they seem to be well established in most areas of the northen province. Caracals are especially thick in many places. Servals less so. Genets are all over the place. Much like Raccoons in the USA

if i wanted to hunt them where should i look? I have friends in south africa But they know very little about cat hunting.

If your friends are not Licensed PH's you cannot hunt them. You must be with a licensed PH if your not a resident of South Africa when you hunt anyplace.

Where do they live? South Africa is a big country with very diverse habitat. If they live in the eastern cape or near cape town I cannot help much because I don't hunt in those areas.

Hunting them at night with bait is best but sometimes you will see one scavanging a kill during the daytime when the bigger predators are sleeping.

they are from lots of different places, Heidelberg on western cape close to massel bay,pietersberg which they said was close to you and most are from the Delareyville between vryburg and klerksdorp. can you help? what does it take for the to get a hp permit?
I talk to you on the other room about trapping in south africa. can i get the permit to trap there or not? lots of questions. :grin:

By law strickly speaking you can do anything the owner of the land will get a permit for. The land owner can usually get permits for most things he wants with very little reason much of the time. It's simply a matter of asking for it and saying something like I have had predation on my sheep or chickens. This damage permit allows the land owner or his designated person to hunt or trap the problem animals. It's actually a pretty easy thing to do.

However these kinds of permits will not allow exporting the skins. For that you will need to hire a Professional Hunter who has a log book and can do the paperwork to allow export. Without the log book filled out you will not get the skins out of the country legally, nor will you be able to import them into the USA. You may be able to have the tanning done in South Africa and then have them shipped to you or collect them on another trip the next year and take them home as a curio.

Skins of all types are for sale in most bigger curio shops there. If you bring a gun you will need the name and address of the place your staying and the name of the hunting outfitter you will be with. If you borrow a gun then it's not an issue.

You would be far better off having the "friends" you have in RSA sort this out for you. They are close to the source and can make a plan with the local people for you. I'm stricktly a PH on a regerested hunting consession. We have all the permits to hunt cats and such s it's no problem for us.

Here is a caracal cat or African Lynx I shot in July of this year. I shot it while waiting at a leopard kill which was hanging in a tree.

that's a very nice cat! I hate to put too much on my friends and would like to bring the cats home to have mounted. With that said i probably need to find a PH that would be willing to work with me on trapping. do you have any recommendations for finding a PH?

I think this is going in circles, you first need a landowner with the proper permission and permits from Nature Conservation. Once you have that you can get the other things quite easily.

As far as putting your friends out on this, Hmmmm Are they friends? I'm not fully understanding the situation there. It will require your friends find and arrange landowners to get the needed permits.

This is why people who go to hunt there use Outfitters to do all this work. Your basically replacing your need of an outfitter with your "friends" who live there. If your "friends" who live there cannot find you a place to do this you would need to go through an outfitter to do it. It's not gonna happen over the internet chat like this. If you would like me to organize you a small cat hunt for 2004 in May or June I can do that. I am a PH and have the consession with all the permits to hunt cats on the same property the one above came from.
