M29 Grips
« on: December 01, 2009, 01:21:31 AM »
Guys - I'm looking for a comfortable pair of grips for my M29 Mountain Gun.  I'm gettin' wuzzied out and am tired of having the darn thing pound the heck out of my hand when I start practicing for big game season.

I have tried the S&W magnum/target grips that first came with the piece, as well as standard sized service panels with a Tyler T-Grip, and now a pair of older Hogues or Pachmyers, or whatever.  Almost all of them have given me a good 'feel' when on the gun but the recoil with heavy loads is starting to wuz me out.  But, I don't feel too bad as even old Elmer his own self said that he didn't shoot too many magnum loads out of his 44s on account of the recoil, so I feel like I am in good company.

But, need to ask if any of you fellas have used the grips for the S&W 500 - I guess they are supposed to fit the N-frames and may help reduce felt recoil.  Does anyone have experience with those grips on a N-frame and how did they feel?????  Where did you get them??

Thanks in advance.  Mikey.

For me the Pachmayr Presentation is the best grip made for the M29/629 guns. It at least used to be made in both small and large sizes so as to better fit your hand whether large or small. As best as I can recall the small size best fit my glove size 10 hands. I'll take it over any other grip I've ever seen on the S&W N frame guns.

I have the SW500 grips on my 6" 29 and my 4"ountain gun.  They...are...fabulous!!!!  YES....get them!  They fit round butt frames I believe.

A good pair of padded shooting golves made for revolver shooting goes a long long long way in taming the hurt from recoil . You have tried a lot of grips already . Give some good gloves a try .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I too have them on my M-629 and they work well. They have a softer compound covering the backstrap as compared to the rest of the grip.   Here's the link to them..........http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=10001&productId=12993&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=46303&training=

Houge 500 grips fit N, K, L, and any round butt grip frame S&W now makes they're all the same size. Don't think they'll fit J's though? They are very comfortable shooting and I have them on both my 629-4s. Bought both pair I have straight from S&W.

I agree with "Shootall" and get some shooting gloves for those rough practice sessions. I use motorcycle gloves that also have padding in the palm area and the fingertips are cut off. These are a lot cheaper than buying grips and your hands will not suffer from that pain especially in the web of the palm.

Grips(hypothetically) are always on your pistol, what if you see that monster buck and forgot your gloves at home? I'm sure Mikey has seen the elephant enough to have tuffer hands than this.

Aw Steve, thanks.  I really don't want to talk about the last elephant encounter I was involved in as it was way too funny and I still laugh so hard about it that it hurts.

Doug - I checked my frame and it is the square butt M29-2.  This started life as a 6.5" M29 that I shot a lot but got tired of lugging it around - sent it back to S&W for a Mountain Gun barrel, and they beadblasted and blued the gun to match (bbl was stainless, frame blue).  Hogue does not make that grip for the square butt M29 - double dang!

I do however have a nice pair of old motorcycle gloves hangin' around since my two-wheel days and I think I could put them to good use.

And I think I have a old pair of something I could mess up, so I'll keep trying.  Thanks all.

Then, there are no 500s made for it.

Hi Mikey...GBs right...my 1st choice would be the SW500 grips, but...if not doable..Packs are a very close second.  I do believe they make a decellarator (sp?) grip.

Wood grips are to look at, Pachmayr's are for hunting and to shoot small groups with!  At least that's the way it's always worked for me.   :)

Most of the  S&W grips for their handguns have an  exposed backstrap and all the recoil concentrates in this area and into your hand.  Any grip that will completely wrap around the grip frame will help in your recoil problem.  I personally like a set of wooden grips (from Nill-Grips) on my S&W 629:

I found these to be very comfortable.  I later found a set of Pachmeyer rubber grips that were also very comfortabel:

These also completely wrapped around the grip frame.  They both are very comfortable to shoot with your heavier hunting loads.

Larry, is Nill an American company? There are a very good looking grip and look functional also. Looks like we have same interests in hunting handguns? Posted this before but here's my 629 Classic with 500 grips and Ultra red dot on it.
Sorry somehow the photo information keeps changing after I type it in???

Hey S.B,
They are a German company:     http://www.nill-grips.com/

I have about four pair of the grips in different styles.  We had a guy selling them at the local gun shows.  Haven't seen him for a while.  I do know you can order direct from the company though.

I went with Ahrends Retro Target Grips. Comfortable and gives you plenty to hang on to. My second choice is always Hogue soft rubber monogrips.
