Why is it hard to re-chamber a Marlin?
« on: October 17, 2009, 07:33:27 AM »
;D  Ok,. I'm just askin here. I've re-barreled a few Savage's and they were not all that difficult to do. Now, I know they are a bolt action and not as many moving parts (well....maybe) as a Lever gun. But I'm gonna ask anyway:

It seems to me that a Levergun has the mechanics (the throw) to yank....say a 357 mag case from a tube...and then throw it up into a barrel chambered for that caliber.

So, why is there no aftermarket companies that make the tubes, barrels, Levers 'n such that would make it "easy" to re-chamber a Levergun?

Maybe it's a whole lot harder than it seems.

It's not as easy as sounds.  My truck has four wheels, but any rim won't fit it.  It has eight lugs.  No way 4,5,or 6 lug rims will fit without MAJOR modifications.

As said already it's not so easy especially not so easy as a Savage bolt gun.

Ya gotta remove the barrel and tube, cut new barrel to match contour as well as for any dovetail for tube if applicable and headspace barrel. Then ya gotta drill and tap for sights or scope bases in perfect alignment and along the line ya gotta chamber it and work out the new geometry for the new round which can be not so bad or extremely complicated especially if you're trying to go to a longer round.

Yeah it can be done but is not a DIY at home kinda job especially if ya have to ask why.

If you have a decent lathe and cnc mill there really inst anything that complicated about it.   The savage barrels are really easy to headspace because of the barrel nut, no barrel nut on a marlin or most other bolt actions, that means you have to have a lathe to chamber it then snap it up,  not easy to do without the proper tools.

Yeah, I can understand the more complex issue of headspacing without the simple concept of the Savage barrel nut. For something like the Marlin, the barrel has to be tightened against the receiver, then measured for headspace, then cut for depth. At the same time, the barrel will need cut for either scope mounts or open sight dovetail cuts. Easy....yet hard. Easy if you have the tools.

It would seem to me the harder part may be getting the shell from the magazine tube to the chamber. Especially if your going to go from say.....a 30-30 to a 357 maximum or a 44 mag to a 357 max.
