Taming a 45-70
« on: October 04, 2009, 08:16:50 AM »
This is a brake I am making for my 45-70.  Not finished yet.  Still have to sand blast it & tighten it down.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

What was the original stock material?

I use 303S stainless for my muzzle brakes.  The "S" means that sulpher was added to improve machinabillty.

Very nice work ;D  I'm sure it'll blow the beer cans off the shelf in the deer blind ::) ::)  It IS very nice, and should work well.  I just never could get into the blast.

Same here, that's nice work, but I like my 45-70 SS Ultra Hunter just the way it is, no need to blast me or anyone near me with a braked barrel, 300gr TSX-FBs at 2300+fps will do fine all by themselves without it, I never notice the recoil when making a shot while hunting and my Leadsled takes the sting out of bench work.  ;)

Brake are not nearly as loud 10 feet off the ground in a tree stand as they are on the ground.  It's the sound waves bounceing back up off the ground that make these brakes so aweful loud.

A bit off topic, so I appologize first off.  Where did you guys get those thumbhole stocks from?  I was perusing GSI and didn't see 'em there.

As stated, the t-hole stocks are from H&R, Boyd's makes them, the cinnamon comes on a few models, the camo only comes on the USHD, they're listed on the accessory barrel page, Boyd's lists them on ebay and in the seconds occasionally too.

Ok.....stupid question (well maybe not....but I'm gonna ask it....no, don't do it...Yup, I'm gonna!) It's my inner child talkin to me again. We do that when I go to buy another  gun. I always win.

Did you thread the end of your barrel? And what did you do this with? I am assuming on a lathe? What type?

Thanks.

Dave.

Yep I did it on a Jet 12x36 lathe.  Been gunsmithing over 30 years.  I threaded the barrel 3/4x24 tpi.

Nice shooting Tim, awesome group with such a monster. Also very nice looking cannon. Only one small problem I see with your SS 45-70. Do you want me to say it or not, no don't say it they will make fun of you. OK say it ( IT IS RIGHT HANDED ) it's all backwards, put a left handed thumb hole on her and wallah great weapon.

Yeah, that's been the biggest complaint about the laminated t-hole stocks, no left hand version.  :-\

Thanks,

Interesting project.  I'm with Tim.  I love my 45-70 SS Ultra Hunter just the way it is.
