6mm-284 chamber
« on: September 18, 2009, 04:11:58 PM »
Is it possible to rechamber a 243 win to 6mm-284?
I mean to totally clean up the old chamber.

Though I'm not familiar with the cartridge, a few questions arise...

Is the 284 part of this cartridge, the belted style? If so the bolt face will either need to be opened up or another bolt will be needed.
Is your rifle a short action?

I've seen chambers rebored on bench guns. Most have had the original chamber lopped off, rethreaded and then rebored.

The short answer is "yes", but the case is fatter and may not feed correctly without modification of the feed rails/lips.  Might be less expensive and result in a better overall ending just to trade for something else like a .25-06.

I should have mentioned that this would be in a T/C encore that is now a 243 win. Maybe that will help more. Just wandering.
Thanks

;) ;D The 6mm-284 was popular in NW W. Va. when I hunted there. I looked over a rebarreled model 700, but passed on the rifle. Later, I came to the decision that a good 6mm with a longer barrel and the ability to seat bullets for max. powder capacity would just about do anything the wildcat would, and as Coyote Hunter said a .25-06 will do it all, plus you have the advantage of heavier bullets if ever needed.     ;D :D ;)

It sounds like an utterly useless conversion with very short life.

maybe you should ask in the encore rifles section.

Yes you can, but the rebated rim might cause you trouble over the extractor, because of the fatter case.

Otherwise its very doable and most likely has been done many times.

I would ask SSKIndustries.com, they would know everything about it.

If you wanting something faster why not go with the 06? The -06 case is larger the the .284 case, you will not have to change the blot face and it is easier to find. Just my thoughts.

If this was for a 243 Winchester in a bolt action, the bolt face wouldn't need to be changed.

The 284 Winchester is a rebated rim with a 0.50" diameter case with the conventional 0.473" diameter bolt face.

Yes you can. But you may have to change out the extractor on you encore barrel.
