I only know labs and I think they are the most well rounded dog you can hunt! However, I am very interested in a pointing breed that will be strictly for "upland" (sharptail grouse, Huns, and pheasant). What breed of pointers would be the perfect fit for such species in both open grass lands and brush choked coulees? I will need a dog with great stamina out here as well. Please help!

In Mt, you should be fine with any of the pointers:

German Shorthaired
Pointer
Setters ( english the only ones worth a darn)
Visla
Brittiany

There are lots of choices.
A German Wirehaired Pointer or a Drathaar.
German Shorthair Pointer.
Pointer
Small or large Munsterlander.
Britany
English Setter
Visla
These are in order of my favorites.Are you hanting on foot? Are conditions hot or cold? There are larger or smaller running strains of some of these breeds. Are burrs a problem? Longhaired dogs like Britanies and setters and Munsterlanders pick up more burrs. A pointer or shorthair may be better in hot weather.

I beg to differ, the Irish red setters are making alot of progress in the field.

Pointers are my favorite. They can have a very wide range though. English setters are a little closer in but still have a good range. Havent hunted with anything else.
