444 Marlin Contender

Do you think i can size the top of 444 brass with a 44 carbide die. Just the top 1/2" to hold the bullet. Less stress on the brass and no lube. Good ideal yes no?

I think it would be worth a try.  It would be the equivalent of neck sizing.

The .44 magnum and .444 Marlin cases are NOT the same even if both use same diameter bullet. Yeah it "might work" but then it might not. You'll really gain nothing from such activity and will find it a far wiser path to take to use the proper dies for the round. If you wish to do a less than full length sizing of the brass do it with a .444 die and just don't run it all the way in tho in honesty I just don't think there is any benefit to such.

I've given the idea a good and fair trial in both .44 mag and .45 Colt cases and found it actually hurt not helped my accuracy. Your mileage may vary.

There is nothing mythical or magical about size dies. Basically a piece of steel with a hole in it used to squeeze down a piece of brass. I know that the 44 mag and the 444 marlin are not based on the same case but for a 'neck size' only I would try it. If it were me I'd size it just to the depth of the particular bullet I was using and no more. Make up a dummy round for starters.
