My 50 cal really shoots! Man am I happy!
« on: October 18, 2009, 12:19:10 PM »
This afternoon I went out to shoot my Traditions 50 cal. had a scope on it an figured on shootin these new bullets. Couldn't hit a thing >:( Whats goin on here says I? Did have this scope on a lower power spring piston airrifle, maybe got messed up?  Pulled the scope an mounts, an used open sights that came on the rifle. Now I've shot the muzzleloader with these open sights before an did good, so I never touched the sight after that time. I go ahead an load the rifle, 50 grains triple seven, an the new bullet to me anyway, all lead 295grain power belt, pressed 209 primer into place, an took nice steady as could be of aim, an touched it off! BOOM! says it! Carefully set the rifle down an headed to target. Well I tell ya, was'nt really sure where that bullet hole was gonna be, I knew it would be on paper. How about my surprise! :o at finding that hole at just about dead center! Now understand, I'm shootin at about an 1 1/2" dia. circle, with no fancy bench resting, just my elbows restin on top of old wood table, holdin the rifle an taken staedy aim as I can lookin through those open sights at a little circle. So I load rifle again, cause maybe that first shots a fluke, well it was'nt, next shot was right next to it! still inside that little circle! so load again, an that shots touchin the last one! ;D Ain't nothin like it! Have a good one! scout4<><

Hope I have that luck with mine ;)
Won't be able to find out for up to 6 months
since I just had shoulder surgery last Friday.

Good to hear it!  ;D

I'm pretty happy with my Traditions drop block rifle! I had been shooting 240 gr XTPs in it and was getting 1 3/4"groups at 100 yards, which is acceptable for my hunting needs. But last week I picked up a box of 250 gr Shock Waves as an impulse purchase at the local Wally World. !!!WOW!!! They cut my groups down to prezactly 1" at 100 yards! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Gamehauler,  I'm three months into my shoulder rehab, and I'm shooting again, albeit with my left shoulder.  It's kinda' getting to feel normal now to shoot off-side.  After about two months, you can probably shoot off side if you use a shooting stick or bipod.  After three months, I've just started strength training , but I can support the forestock a bit.

That sounds great, now are you going to inch that charge a little above 50 grns? Not that you have to but with 209 priming the gun must be able to handle more, hunting in the plans? Of course this could change your trajectory/impact.

with 50 grains of powder, those heavy bullets would kill deer, but you are lobbing them on an arc trajectory. You probably have 4"-6" difference among POI at 50 yards, 100 yards, and 125 yards. I would try charges between 70 and 90 grains, just to get a flatter trajectory.
