Today was my first good duck hunt of the season. It hasn't been too hot here, and this is not great duck hunting country anyway. But what there is, is good as few folks bother with water fowl. This morning my golden retrievers and I headed out to the local marsh and lake to see what was flying. My old boy only hunted a bit as we slipped along the lake to jump some duck. I killed one teal, and he was more than content to let his pal do the retrieving.
Later, I moved down into the marshes, the old male,at 14 and a half years of age, was content to sit and watch us wad the water and reeds to a suitable spot. My little female thought every jump in the water was wonderful. I had her on a leash the last few yards as I expected ducks on some small pot holes. When we peaked over the brush, we were not disappointed. Mallards jumped everywhere. I knocked down a drake with the BPS 10 ga. and WW # 1's. Peach made a fine retrieve. We dropped down in the brush, as ducks were flying everywhere...
Soon a mallard hen was incoming, another shot from the 10 dropped her cold. Peach retrieved. Next a small bunch of teal came in from behind. I picked one out, and fired, just then another crossed his pals path and two green wings came down in the marsh. Peach found them in short order.
Finally, another green wing came in low and a blast from the 10 brought it down. We had our limit of 6 in maybe an hour and a half. Hope to get somemore shooting before freezeup....
This 10 bore is a great duck killer.....
