Contender with 45/70 and a scope
« on: October 25, 2009, 05:41:07 PM »
Whats your thoughts on this gun and price:

Contender 45/70 12"? blue with unknown scope, blueing is about a true 85+% and has  rubber grip and forend. Price $349

Thinking about picking it up though I would sell or trade the barrel for a .410 10" VR

Price good?

The price is OK provided it's a newer frame (mid to late 1980s or later).  If it was one of the older frames without the easy open feature or if there is rust anywhere, I wouldn't buy it period.  Also, the T/C octagonal barrels are old; I wouldn't buy them either.

I wish I had more time to look at it as I was in a real hurry when I spotted it but I did see it had the engraving on its side so it should be of a newer model. The barrel was round and the condition showed no rust.
The scope had a cover over it so I couldn't tell what kind it was.
The contender was behind glass so I coundn't pick it up so I had to give it a quick once over.
I am sure I could get it for 300 - 325

I would jump on it if you can get it for 300 or less
I look at it like this 200 is about the frame max
130 to 160 for a Barrel
then the scope ??
and grip and forend maybe 40 ?
Good Luck

OK I talked with the dealer and he had 379 on it but he went down to 360. so its a little more than what I thought was on it but at 360 its not too bad a price.

It  has a 14" 45/70 barrel with a factory break on it, burris scope and the blueing is as he say's 95%
Has TC black grip and forearm.

It does not come with the rear sight - how much does a new rear sight for a contender run?

You will have a tough time finding a frame in decent shape for less than $200.00 and that is bare.  Most contenders I have seen lately have been in the $375-$400 range without a mounted scope but did have sights.  Rear sights are often available here one GBO for about $5.00-$20.00.

The scope is worth at least a 100
